About the Role
The role of Ordained Anglican Chaplain at HMP Brixton involves providing faith, belief, and pastoral care to prisoners and staff within the Anglican tradition, while also supporting individuals of other faiths and none as part of a multi-faith chaplaincy team. You will work collaboratively to ensure delivery of the PSI 05/2016 Faith and Pastoral Care for Prisoners policy and contribute to faith and non-faith-based courses within the establishment.
Key responsibilities include leading worship, prayer, meditation, and faith-specific meetings; providing pastoral care and spiritual welfare; supporting crisis situations; mentoring chaplains and volunteers; and fostering links with local faith communities to aid offender resettlement. You will also contribute to training programmes, represent the chaplaincy team in meetings, support the Assessment, Care in Custody and Teamwork (ACCT) process, and may take on additional roles such as Family Liaison Officer or volunteer coordinator.
This is a non-rotational, non-operational role without line management or supervisory responsibilities. The post-holder is expected to take responsibility for their own spiritual health and development through prayer, reflection, study, and retreat.
The duties are subject to reasonable changes and additional tasks as required, with significant adjustments discussed with the post-holder.
Experience
Experience in providing pastoral care and spiritual guidance within a faith community is essential. Knowledge and understanding of multi-faith environments and the ability to support people of different faiths and none is required.
About you
You will be an ordained Anglican minister with a strong commitment to spiritual care and pastoral support. You should be able to work collaboratively within a multi-faith chaplaincy team and demonstrate empathy, resilience, and excellent communication skills. The ability to engage with prisoners, staff, volunteers, and external faith communities is important. You should be proactive in supporting offender resettlement and able to contribute to training and development activities.
Qualifications
Ordination in the Anglican Church is required. Further theological training and experience relevant to prison chaplaincy is desirable.
