About the Role
Working at HM Treasury puts you at the heart of government, making a difference to the UK economy and people’s lives across the UK. You will join the State Pensions and Pensioner Benefits branch at an exciting time, working in a high-profile policy area with wide-reaching implications. The role involves managing a spending portfolio valued at over £150 billion per annum, projected to grow rapidly in the coming years. Recent work includes launching the independent State Pension age review, correcting historic State Pension underpayments, advising ministers on the Department for Work and Pensions’ (DWP) annual uprating review, and reforming Winter Fuel Payments.

This dynamic and cross-cutting role offers exposure to policy issues across HM Treasury and the opportunity to develop core policymaking skills. Key responsibilities include strategic reform of the State Pension system to ensure sustainability and fairness, advising ministers ahead of and between fiscal events, driving value for money through Treasury approval processes and efficiency savings, and working closely with DWP and other partners to develop detailed policy proposals. You will also contribute to a well-rounded pensions strategy alongside colleagues covering private pensions and welfare spending.

HM Treasury is a high-performing, inclusive, and sociable workplace with offices across London, Darlington, Norwich, Birmingham, and Leeds, working seamlessly as one Treasury. This role offers the chance to influence decisions that directly affect the UK’s prosperity and public finances.
