About the Role
Help shape the future of one of London's most ambitious councils. Merton is changing. We're delivering one of London's most ambitious regeneration programmes, creating London's first Borough of Sport, transforming services around neighbourhoods and prevention, and ensuring Merton has a stronger voice nationally on the issues that matter to our residents.
We are looking for an exceptional Policy and Public Affairs Officer to work at the heart of a modern, ambitious council. You will provide strategic policy advice to senior leaders, influence policy decisions, and help position Merton as one of local government's leading voices.
You will work directly with senior officers and members, turning complex national policy into practical action and ensuring Merton stays ahead of the curve.
No two days will be the same. Your responsibilities will include monitoring Government policy, legislation and parliamentary activity to identify opportunities and risks for the council; providing strategic policy advice and political intelligence to senior leaders; coordinating responses to Government consultations and national policy reviews; organising ministerial visits, parliamentary engagement and stakeholder events; researching innovative practice from across the UK and beyond to help shape better public services; and helping ensure Merton is recognised as a council that not only responds to change but helps shape it.
Experience
Proven experience in policy analysis, public affairs or a related field, with a strong understanding of Government processes and parliamentary activity.
About you
You combine excellent political awareness with first-class analytical and communication skills. You understand how Government works, can quickly interpret complex policy and explain it clearly. You build strong relationships with senior stakeholders, exercise excellent judgement, and enjoy identifying opportunities others might miss.
Qualifications
A relevant degree or equivalent experience in public policy, political science, public administration or a related discipline is desirable.
