About the Role

We are seeking a Principal Consultant to lead the delivery of CDM and construction safety services across complex and high-value projects. This role requires an experienced professional capable of operating autonomously, taking ownership of Principal Designer (PD) duties, leading client and design team engagement, and ensuring robust health and safety risk management throughout the project lifecycle.
You will influence CDM and construction safety delivery across RIBA Stages 2–5 and contribute to the growth and development of our service offering. Typical responsibilities include:
- Leading CDM Principal Designer duties across multiple projects
- Developing and owning design risk management strategies to identify, challenge and reduce risks through design
- Chairing design risk workshops, coordination meetings and project reviews
- Providing authoritative advice to clients on statutory duties under CDM and the Building Safety Act
- Overseeing and assuring quality of key CDM deliverables such as Pre-Construction Information (PCI), Design Risk Registers/Hazard Logs, and Health and Safety Files (HSF)
- Acting as Principal Designer under the Building Safety Act where required
- Influencing design teams to drive practical and proportionate risk reduction
- Managing project delivery in line with scope, programme and commercial expectations
- Supporting proposal preparation, scopes and fee submissions
- Contributing to the development of internal standards, tools and best practice
Leadership & Responsibility
You will lead CDM/PD delivery on projects or programmes, act as a key client contact, provide technical oversight and quality assurance, mentor consultants, drive service consistency and improvement, and identify opportunities for repeat work and service expansion.
Experience
- Extensive experience in CDM/construction safety roles, including leading Principal Designer appointments
- Strong knowledge of CDM Regulations 2015 and their practical application
- Experience undertaking or leading Principal Designer duties under the Building Safety Act
- Solid understanding of design processes and RIBA stages with ability to influence design development
- Proven ability to lead risk management discussions and challenge design decisions effectively
- Experience managing multiple projects, priorities and client relationships
- Commercial awareness including scope, fees and delivery expectations
- Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills

Qualifications
- Degree or equivalent in construction, engineering, health & safety or related field (or HNC/HND with significant relevant experience)
- NEBOSH Construction Certificate (or equivalent) expected
- Chartered or working towards Chartered membership of IOSH, APS or IIRSM
