The Cultural Heritage and Archaeology team is one of the largest heritage consultancies in the country, working across the UK and Ireland. We cover all aspects of the historic environment including archaeology, built heritage, setting and design throughout the full lifecycle of projects. We provide expert advice on a growing portfolio of heritage-related enquiries addressing the management of change in our historic environment.

We work on high profile and large-scale infrastructure projects in the UK, Ireland and beyond as part of a multi-disciplinary team, aiming to deliver high quality work while contributing to innovative approaches and challenges within the heritage sector.

We are seeking a Senior Consultant to join our Cultural Heritage and Archaeology Team in London. You will be responsible for managing and delivering archaeology projects in the southern half of the country, principally fieldwork projects. This role is key to the heritage team’s development and requires a combination of high level technical expertise in archaeology and heritage with commercial and business acumen.

You will lead fieldwork projects from planning and consent applications through to delivering bespoke archaeological strategies and works for developments and infrastructure. Much of your work will need to withstand the test of public inquiry. Ideally, you will have a specialism or area of knowledge that contributes to the development of the team and wider business.

You will have a strong awareness of Health and Safety and risk management, particularly on fieldwork projects. You will have a proven track record of successful project delivery, strong communication skills, and the ability to develop and maintain excellent relationships with clients and peers. You will also have the drive and imagination to identify and pursue business development and marketing opportunities.

You will be based in either the Cambridge or Bristol offices and will actively promote and diversify the team’s service offering, winning work from internal and external clients.

Key responsibilities include monitoring and assuring the work of WSP-approved fieldwork subcontractors both on-site and through technical review of deliverables including RAMS, preparing competitive tenders, designing scope and methodology for archaeological fieldwork in accordance with WSP Health and Safety protocols, producing or contributing to archaeological desk-based assessments, and undertaking stakeholder, curator and client liaison.

Experience
- Archaeological fieldwork project management including project, financial and staff management
- Robust knowledge of Irish archaeology and history
- Full knowledge of the planning process and relevant environmental and heritage legislation and guidance
- Experience in heritage and planning, masterplanning, heritage conservation, heritage-led regeneration, recreation and tourism, heritage sustainability masterplanning, placemaking, multi-disciplinary collaboration and business development
- Proven track record of successful project delivery within a busy consultancy environment
