About the Role
At WSP, you will have the opportunity to work on landmark rail projects, contributing your expertise to deliver safe, reliable, and integrated system safety solutions. You will provide system safety support and guidance on large, complex projects under the direction of our senior team and take a leading role on smaller projects with mentorship. Key responsibilities include planning, supporting, and potentially chairing Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment workshops; preparing System Definitions, Safety Plans, Hazard Records, and Safety Justification Reports; and demonstrating the application of the Common Safety Method on Risk Evaluation and Assessment (CSM-RA) for rail projects involving technical, operational, or organisational change. You will collaborate closely with clients and internal teams to develop designs, technical standards, specifications, and requirements. Additionally, you may act as Project Manager for smaller projects with senior team support. Experience
- Relevant post-graduate experience in system safety engineering (rail experience desirable but not essential)
- Familiarity with Engineering Safety Management systems such as iESM or Yellow Book
- Knowledge and experience applying the Common Safety Method on Risk Evaluation and Assessment (CSM-RA) Regulation on UK rail projects
- Background in mainline or metro railway disciplines such as signalling, telecoms, or E&P
- Experience in consultancy environments is advantageous

About you
- Strong technical engineering background with a degree or extensive relevant experience
- Corporate membership with a professional institution such as SaRS, IET, or IMechE
- Professional registration or working towards registration as an Incorporated or Chartered Engineer
- Ability to work collaboratively with clients and internal teams
- Motivated to take on leadership roles and project management responsibilities on smaller projects

Qualifications
- Degree in a technical engineering discipline or equivalent experience
- Desirable: Knowledge and experience with CENELEC EN 50126/8/9 standards
- Familiarity with EN50121 (EMC) and cyber security considerations
- Experience as an assessor (Independent Safety Assessor or with an Assessment Body)
- Formal qualifications or experience in project and commercial management
