About the Role
Balfour Beatty Power T&D is recruiting for a Senior Quantity Surveyor to support the Lower Thames Crossing Project. The Senior Quantity Surveyor is responsible for the commercial management of projects from pre-contract through to final account, ensuring robust cost control, value for money, commercial compliance, and effective risk management. This role provides leadership to the commercial team and supports the delivery of projects in line with contractual, financial, and governance requirements. The successful candidate will seek to minimise project costs while maximising value, ensuring the highest standards of safety, quality, and performance are achieved.

Typically, the Senior Quantity Surveyor will be a Chartered Member of RICS, ICES, or CIOB (or working towards chartership) and will have experience managing and mentoring less-experienced commercial team members, supporting their development towards professional qualification. The role requires a commitment to maintaining Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and contributing to the ongoing development of commercial capability within the project team.

Key responsibilities include leading the commercial management of assigned projects, ensuring adherence to contract conditions (typically NEC4 or equivalent), managing project budgets, forecasting, cost reporting (CVRs), and change control processes. You will prepare, assess, and agree compensation events, valuations, and final accounts, ensuring payment mechanisms, applications, and certifications are managed accurately and on time. You will manage subcontract procurement strategies, including tendering, negotiation, and contract award, identify and mitigate commercial and contractual risks, and support governance approvals and compliance with internal commercial and financial controls.

Providing clear commercial advice to project teams and senior stakeholders, contributing to dispute avoidance and resolution, and offering line management, mentoring, and technical guidance to Quantity Surveyors and Assistant Quantity Surveyors are also key aspects of the role. Collaboration with project managers, procurement, legal, and finance teams to support successful project delivery is essential, as is building effective relationships with clients, supply chain partners, and internal stakeholders. Producing accurate, timely commercial reports for internal review and senior leadership, ensuring robust record-keeping and audit trails, and supporting continuous improvement initiatives within commercial processes and systems complete the role.
