About the Role
If you’re interested in making a difference to people’s lives, HM Treasury offers an exciting opportunity to influence decision making that affects the whole of the UK. Working at the heart of government, we collaborate across departments to promote responsible public spending and drive strong and sustainable economic growth. Our work ranges from regulating the financial sector to reducing carbon emissions, promoting British trade, and supporting jobs and growth nationwide.

As part of the Darlington Economic Campus, a cross-government hub, we work closer to the communities we serve to tackle key national issues.

We are recruiting for a Senior Sanctions Adviser to join our Licensing Unit. This fast-paced and diverse role involves working on high-profile financial sanctions issues. The Licensing Unit assesses applications and makes recommendations on whether licences should be issued to allow transactions that financial sanctions would otherwise prevent. This requires collaboration across OFSI and government to progress cases, identify trends, assess risks, and handle legal challenges.

The Senior Sanctions Adviser will lead on complex licensing cases, manage a portfolio of cases, and provide expert advice and recommendations to senior decision makers including Ministers. The role involves policy development, external engagement, and working flexibly across OFSI to support urgent workstreams. This part-time role does not include line management responsibilities.

Applicants interested in the full-time role with line management responsibilities should apply separately.

Requirements

Experience
Experience in casework, investigation, or policy implementation is desirable but not essential. Candidates should demonstrate the ability to quickly develop an understanding of complex and sensitive areas.

About you
- Ability to analyse and use a range of relevant, credible information from various sources to support challenging decisions.
- Ability to handle a varied workload in a fast-paced environment, balancing proactive project work and reactive tasks.
- Awareness of how your role fits within wider organisational priorities.
- Strong communication skills for engaging with internal and external stakeholders.
- Ability to work independently on complex cases with limited guidance.

Qualifications
No specific qualifications are required; however, a strong aptitude for policy development, case management, and legal compliance is essential.
