About the Role
Shell Trading and Supply (T&S) manages a global portfolio including crude oil, refined products, natural gas, LNG, electrical power, chemical feedstocks, low carbon fuels, and environmental products. With hubs in London, Houston, Dubai, Rotterdam, and Singapore, T&S operates in over 25 countries and employs over 7,000 people. The organisation handles millions of barrels of oil and billions of standard cubic feet of gas daily, alongside managing 1,000 vessels worldwide. This role sits within the Crude and Products team, reporting to the Managing Counsel Shipping, Distribution Operations & Products Trading Europe.
You will provide professional, timely, cost-effective, and commercial legal advice and support to T&S’ Shipping and Maritime and freight trading businesses. You may also advise Distribution Operations and Products Trading businesses, with work allocation directed by your line manager. Your responsibilities include advising on contentious and non-contentious shipping and chartering matters, supporting projects such as fleet renewals, decarbonisation, and shipping technology, and assisting with challenges arising from evolving industry and regulatory environments.
You will draft, review, and negotiate contracts and agreements, provide legal advice to senior management on complex shipping and maritime transactions, and collaborate with business and functional teams to manage legal risks and enable business objectives. Operating in a fast-paced, highly visible trading environment, you will also collaborate proactively with Legal colleagues across multiple commodities to support Distribution Operations and Products Trading businesses.
Experience
- Advanced experience supporting shipping and maritime commercial activities
- Strong understanding of shipping and maritime law including charterparties, bills of lading, cargo claims, demurrage, vessel management agreements, and oil spill response issues
- Recent dispute resolution experience desirable
- Exposure to international civil and/or common law contracts and physical commodity trading business
- Proven ability to identify critical legal risks and develop compliant, creative legal and commercial solutions
- Experience working independently and prioritising effectively under pressure

Qualifications
- Qualified to practice as a solicitor or barrister in a common law jurisdiction
- Fluent written and spoken English
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills balanced with commercial awareness
- Ability to frame advice that enables business outcomes while protecting Shell’s licence to operate
