About the Role
Join the London Borough of Newham and help build a fairer community. We are a vibrant, dynamic, and culturally rich borough with a young population and limitless potential. Our Children with Disabilities (CwD) Social Work Team provides statutory services to children and families living with disabilities. You will manage a varied caseload including new referrals, Children in Need (CiN), Child Protection (CP), and looked after cases. This role involves long-term, rewarding work focused on improving the quality of life for young people and their families.
Our social work practice is underpinned by Systemic and Restorative approaches, placing high-quality relationships at the heart of our work. We offer a supportive environment with a hybrid working model, modern office space, flexible working policies, and clinical support to promote your wellbeing and work-life balance.
As part of our commitment to building a fairer Newham, we are combining our Assessment and Intervention services into a new Family Support and Safeguarding Service, creating positive change for families and practitioners alike.
"Our social workers deal with interesting and unique cases, building specialist knowledge which will be invaluable for their futures. Working in CwD is about being an advocate; it’s about giving a voice to those who need it most. We enable families to learn and grow together, improving quality of life for children and young people who might otherwise be left behind." – Service Manager Helen Cusick
"You get involved in all aspects of social work including assessments, CP and CiN cases, court work, and the looked after process. CwD is unique in this respect. It’s busy, but in a good way!" – Sandra B, DCYPS Social Worker
Experience
You must be a qualified social worker registered with Social Work England, having completed your ASYE and subsequent statutory children’s social work experience. Experience supporting children living with disabilities is essential. We also welcome social workers with extensive experience in other statutory teams who have a firm understanding of SEND and the processes affecting children and young people with disabilities.
About you
You are patient, tolerant, and able to be a calming influence on families. Building trust and connecting with families to find supportive strategies is key. You are passionate, trustworthy, empathetic, and have a genuine commitment to advocating for children and their families. Strong emotional strength and resilience are essential qualities for this role.
