About the Role
Newham Libraries is an ambitious service dedicated to improving the quality of life for residents. Following a strong recovery from the pandemic, library visits and book borrowings are increasing year on year. The service works closely with Public Health and other council departments to deliver a high-quality offer across 10 libraries borough-wide, featuring extensive opening hours and a wide range of events and activities.

Senior Library Assistants play a vital role in achieving this ambition. Responsibilities include assisting customers with transactions, shelving books and displays, providing digital assistance and basic digital skills sessions, offering information and sign-posting, supporting or running events such as Under 5s storytimes, and promoting reading and books. Senior Library Assistants may also support outreach activities or resident forums.

As duty managers, Senior Library Assistants may be required to open and close buildings, manage bookings and payments, oversee staff activities, and carry out cashing up and banking functions.

The role requires excellent customer care skills, a passion for libraries and reading, and enthusiasm for STEM and digital engagement. Candidates should enjoy working with the public and have experience in libraries or similar customer-focused environments.
