About the Role
Newham Libraries is an ambitious service dedicated to improving the quality of life for residents. Following a period of growth prior to the pandemic, library visits and book borrowing are now increasing again. The service works closely with Public Health and other Council departments to deliver a high-quality offer across 10 libraries borough-wide, with extensive opening hours and a wide range of events and activities.

Senior Library Assistants play a vital role in delivering this vision. Responsibilities include assisting customers with transactions, shelving books and creating displays, providing digital assistance and basic digital skills sessions, offering information and sign-posting, supporting or running events including Under 5s storytimes, and promoting reading and books. Senior Library Assistants may also support outreach activities or resident forums.

As duty managers, Senior Library Assistants may be required to open and close buildings, manage bookings and payments, oversee staff activities, and perform cashing up and banking functions.

This fixed term role runs from 3rd November 2025 until 29th March 2026.

Experience
Experience in libraries or similar customer-focused environments is essential. Experience running activities and providing digital engagement is desirable.

You will have excellent customer care skills and enjoy helping people. A passion for libraries and reading, enthusiasm for STEM and digital engagement, and strong literacy, numeracy, and IT skills are important. You should enjoy working with the public and be motivated to contribute to the community.
