About the Role
As a Commissioning Editor, you will research, commission and oversee the development of high-quality print and digital ELT content from concept through to delivery as specified in the Publishing Plan. You will commission authors and contributors and collaborate closely with the Global Market Research team, local markets, and Global and Local Brand teams to develop strong concepts that highlight the Customer Value Proposition. Working with in-house cross-functional teams, freelancers, or outsourced service providers, you will brief and manage the development of materials that meet market needs, are delivered on schedule, and stay within budget.
Through a matrix management structure, you will mentor (Senior) Development Editors assigned to your projects. Using your deep understanding of ELT products and markets, you will work with the Publisher and Senior Commissioning Editor to ensure profitable business plans and develop new publishing solutions in partnership with the Global Content and Methodologies team.
Reporting to the Portfolio Senior Commissioning Editor, you will champion your projects and collaborate with Content Development, Global Content and Methodologies, Publishing Operations, Sales and Marketing, Digital Product, and Procurement teams to ensure projects meet audience needs.
Key responsibilities include:
- Segment strategy and publishing planning: attend market-specific product feedback meetings, support competition analysis, and maintain awareness of company strategy and market changes.
- Concept development: conduct school visits and desk research, develop samples, identify and evaluate authors/contributors, contribute to business cases, and support project costing.
- Content development: schedule projects, commission and brief authors, lead Content Development team in evaluating and developing material, oversee internal and external content developers and packagers, ensure high-quality author and contributor care, and administer contracts.
- Budget and resource management: understand investment approval processes, plan external resources, monitor budget phasing, and propose solutions to avoid over- or underspend.
- Staff management: support development of (Senior) Development Editors, delegate appropriately, and maintain awareness of well-being and DEI issues.
- Personal development: stay updated on ELT/EFL issues, participate in training, and maintain industry networks.
These roles are offered on a fixed-term contract basis with a hybrid working model based in London or Madrid offices.
Experience
- Knowledge of ELT markets, especially Pre-Primary and Primary segments in Spain
- Demonstrable ELT publishing experience at project leadership level with a proven track record of successful ELT/EFL product development
- Solid experience in English language teaching with appreciation for diverse international teaching and learning contexts
- Experience working with a range of new media
