About the Role
The Financial Times (FT) is a globally respected news organisation known for its authority, integrity, and accuracy. At the FT, curiosity and ambitious thinking are encouraged within a warm, collaborative culture that supports your growth, career aspirations, and wellbeing. As an Enterprise Architect reporting to the Chief Technology Officer, you will develop and sustain the long-term technology architecture strategy across the FT’s Technology organisation. You will provide enterprise-wide architectural direction to align technology investments, platforms, capabilities, and operating models with the FT’s strategic objectives, ensuring consistent and sustainable evolution.

This strategic role focuses on technology strategy, governance, portfolio oversight, and organisational alignment rather than hands-on solution or technical architecture. You will partner closely with Technology Directors, Product leaders, Principal Technical Architects, and Data teams to connect technology strategy with business priorities, balancing innovation, resilience, operational efficiency, and maintainability.

The FT’s diverse technology landscape spans editorial, subscription, commercial, data, and enterprise platforms. You will maintain a strategic overview of this estate, identifying opportunities to simplify, modernise, and improve alignment across teams, domains, and platforms. As a trusted consultant to the CTO and Technology Senior Leadership Team, you will help shape the future direction of technology at the FT.

Key Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain the enterprise technology strategy, target-state architecture, and roadmaps to support the FT’s long-term objectives.
- Maintain a company-wide perspective on technology platforms, products, services, and capabilities, evaluating major initiatives against enterprise architecture principles.
- Identify opportunities to simplify, modernise, and rationalise the technology estate, reducing duplication, technical debt, complexity, and cost.
- Define and uphold enterprise architecture principles, standards, and governance, chairing architecture review forums and guiding strategic technology decisions.
- Collaborate with Technology and Product leaders to translate business priorities into technology capability roadmaps.
- Provide architectural direction for key organisational, platform, and technology transformation projects.
- Oversee technology lifecycles, platform strategy, build-versus-buy decisions, and major technology suppliers.
- Ensure technology risks, dependencies, and trade-offs are acknowledged and managed.
- Serve as a trusted advisor to the CTO and Senior Leadership Team on technology strategy and investment decisions.
- Build strong relationships across Product, Engineering, Data, and Delivery functions to align architectural priorities.
- Advocate for long-term thinking while balancing delivery and operational needs.
- Foster a culture of simplicity, collaboration, transparency, and continuous improvement within Technology.

Requirements

Experience
- Significant experience in Enterprise Architecture, Technology Strategy, Chief Architecture, or a comparable senior architecture role within a complex digital organisation.
- Proven track record of developing enterprise technology strategies, target-state architectures, and transformation roadmaps.
- Experience influencing technology decisions across multiple teams, products, domains, and collaborators without direct authority.
- Skilled in managing complex technology portfolios balancing strategic objectives with delivery and operational realities.
- Strong understanding of cloud platforms, SaaS ecosystems, enterprise integration patterns, and modern software delivery practices.
- Ability to evaluate technology investments and platform choices from both technical and business perspectives.
- Excellent communication skills, able to explain complex concepts clearly to technical and non-technical audiences including senior leaders.
- Critical thinker with a pragmatic approach to delivery constraints and operational needs.
- Strong collaboration and relationship-building skills across organisational and functional boundaries.

About you
- Strategic thinker with the ability to balance innovation and practical delivery.
- Collaborative and transparent, fostering continuous improvement.
- Comfortable working in a dynamic, diverse technology environment.
- Able to build trusted relationships and influence senior stakeholders.
- Committed to simplicity and operational excellence.

Qualifications
- Relevant qualifications or certifications in Enterprise Architecture or related fields are desirable but not mandatory.
- Demonstrable experience and skills are the primary requirements.
