About the Role
Tower Hamlets Council is recruiting two Environmental Health Apprentices to join our dynamic Regulatory Service within the Communities Directorate, Public Protection Integrated Enforcement Division. This is a unique opportunity to access a fully funded Level 6 Degree Apprenticeship in Environmental Health with Middlesex University, accredited by the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH). Successful completion will enable you to carry out the full range of duties of an Environmental Health Officer.
You will work in a diverse community facing a range of challenges and rewards, collaborating with local communities, businesses, the council, and partners to protect public health and improve health outcomes. The role involves assessing and carrying out enforcement and advisory functions to reduce the risk of disease and ill-health by improving health and wellbeing.
Environmental Health covers all external factors affecting human health and wellbeing including health and safety, food safety, environmental protection (noise and pollution), health and housing, and public health.
This apprenticeship provides excellent training and personal development from experienced Environmental Health Officers and the Regulatory Services Department. You will earn a wage while gaining vital work experience and a nationally recognised qualification. You will be fully supported and mentored throughout your apprenticeship with protected time to attend training and complete coursework. The scheme is designed for people living and entitled to work in England who are not in full-time education.
As an apprentice, you will:
- Join the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health and work as part of a national workforce dedicated to protecting public health and wellbeing.
- Work within all teams assisting officers in Health & Housing, Food Safety, Environmental Protection (noise and pollution), and Health & Safety & Licensing.
- Learn the skills necessary to develop core competencies to become a qualified Environmental Health Officer through both theory and practical experience.
- Combine academic learning with work-based learning through employment in an Environmental Health role.
- Complete a professional portfolio and interview to become an Environmental Health Practitioner via CIEH, with the opportunity to work at Tower Hamlets as a fully qualified officer.

Experience
No prior experience required; enthusiasm and commitment to learning are essential.

You will be motivated to work collaboratively with diverse communities and partners to protect and improve health outcomes. You must be living in Tower Hamlets and entitled to work in England. The apprenticeship is designed for those not in full-time education.
Qualifications
- Resident of Tower Hamlets
- Entitled to work in England
- GCSE Maths and English at Grade 4/C or above plus three additional GCSEs including a science subject
- Two A Levels with a minimum of 96 UCAS tariff points, including at least one A Level in a science or technology subject such as Chemistry, Biology, Human Biology, Physics, Geography, Geology, Environmental Science, Nutrition, Food Science or similar
OR equivalent relevant experience in a local authority service
