About the Role
The role will work on the HS2 project, the UK’s new high speed rail network designed to drive economic growth across Britain by connecting 8 of the UK’s 10 biggest cities with fast, reliable, and frequent services. Costain is delivering the HS2 Rail Systems Tunnel and Lineside Mechanical and Electrical Systems works across the entire HS2 Route (HRS02). The scope includes design, supply, manufacture, installation, testing, commissioning, and maintenance (until handover) of tunnel and lineside M&E systems, including tunnel services within shafts, tunnels, and cross-passages, as well as low voltage electrical power distribution along the open route. Additionally, Costain will design, supply, install, test, and commission tunnel ventilation systems.

The Health & Safety Manager will support the SHE functions by providing SHE solutions and enabling the Contract Leadership and Operational Teams to implement the Group SHE Management System. The role requires building and maintaining relationships with all stakeholders while providing an independent and objective view of SHE performance on the contract.

Responsibilities
- Develop and provide line management to direct reports and liaise with the wider SHE Team
- Support and influence the Contract Leadership Team, clients, and other stakeholders to ensure compliance with the Group SHE Management System and contract performance
- Ensure delivery of training and coaching by competent individuals to enable the contract team to successfully implement the Group SHE Management System
- Be actively involved in the appointment and ongoing assessment of the contract’s supply chain contractors
- Actively support delivery of the annual contract and group SHE objectives
- Develop and implement a contract SHE assurance programme to ensure compliance with company and statutory requirements
- Ensure all unplanned events and assurance findings are categorised, investigated, and lessons shared in accordance with the Group SHE Management System
- Provide timely reporting, analysis, and use of SHE data to support and influence the Contract Leadership Team and develop data-based improvement plans where required

Experience
- Significant SHE related experience
- Experience of managing and training others is desirable
- Relevant industry experience is advantageous

Qualifications
- Essential: Relevant Degree or Diploma or equivalent, NVQ Level 6
- Working towards MIEMA or CMIOSH or equivalent
- Desirable: SHE Degree, Institute of Leadership and Management Level 5, Line Managers toolkit or equivalent, Commercial Awareness, Programme/Project Management
