About the Role
Costain Group's Transportation division is seeking a Senior Estimator with a strong background in railway projects. You will be responsible for preparing pricing for tenders, bids, and other business opportunities from receipt of documents through to tender review and final submission. Reporting to the Divisional Head of Estimating or Lead/Managing Estimator, you will apply your deep knowledge and practical experience to perform complex estimating tasks with minimal supervision. Key responsibilities include working closely within bid teams to prepare analytical estimates, preliminaries pricing, and presenting estimates at bid meetings. You will manage strict deadlines and price work under various contract forms including Traditional NEC, Target Cost, Design & Build, Specification & Drawing, and ECI bids. Additional duties involve preparing quantities from drawings and specifications, appraising material and subcontractor quotations, generating value-engineered solutions, contributing to submission documents, identifying and pricing risks, attending site visits, and using estimating software to prepare detailed cost estimates. You will also allocate and supervise work within the Estimating Team to meet review and submission deadlines, prepare cash flow forecasts, and contribute to procurement and risk management strategies. This role demands thorough understanding of governance, risk, and control, effective communication within bid teams, and strong document control practices throughout the bid process.
Experience
- Extensive experience in a Senior Estimating role, preferably in medium to large value civil engineering works within rail or underground sectors.
- Proven ability to produce accurate estimating schedules and strategies.
- Experience pricing under various contract forms including NEC, Target Cost, and Design & Build.
- Skilled in preparing quantities, analytical estimates, and cash flow profiles.
- Competent in risk identification, pricing, and mitigation.
- Experience managing supplier market testing and procurement strategies.
- Strong knowledge of construction methods, temporary works pricing, and inflation risk application.
- Ability to supervise and allocate work within an estimating team.
- Proficient in estimating software and document control.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and collaborate within bid teams.

Qualifications
