About the Role
The post holder will teach courses within the SEND department, both onsite and at times in community settings. They will ensure high-quality delivery through the implementation of Quality Assurance processes and contribute to the College’s growth by supporting a vibrant curriculum and improving learner outcomes. The role also involves assisting with focused curriculum development, personalised employment support, and learner progression.
The post holder will help meet the College’s strategic goals, especially targeting priority groups under the Adult Skills Fund, and will collaborate with the Head of Curriculum & Quality to deliver a high-quality programme aligned with learner and employer needs.
The allocation of hours is outlined in the job advert and may be subject to change according to business needs.
Key responsibilities include undertaking a teaching commitment for the work offered and ensuring availability to provide learners with a continuous learning experience and minimal disruption to their programme. The role requires planning, preparing, delivering, and evaluating all courses, taking into consideration exams and internal college syllabi and processes.
Deliver stimulating and engaging sessions aligned to the current Scheme of Learning and course intent. Set high expectations for learners from the start, embedding college and course expectations along with key British Values and life skills.
Effectively manage the learning process by guiding and supporting learners, differentiating teaching to meet their needs and interests, and ensuring appropriate challenge and support throughout their learning journey.
Maintain and upload all relevant teaching, learning, and assessment materials to the virtual learning environment, ensuring they are up to date and aligned to unit delivery.
Keep learner, group, and progress tracking documents updated weekly and monthly, including accurate attendance and punctuality records.
Set challenging teaching and learning objectives relevant to the course intent and learner development. Agree individual learning plans with learners, setting and monitoring SMART targets and providing meaningful feedback.
Systematically assess learners’ work, providing timely and developmental feedback to support progress. Involve learners in reflecting on and improving their own performance.
Provide subject specialist information, advice, and support, including guidance on progression within the College or referral to careers teams.
Identify and plan additional support for learners by liaising with the learning support team as necessary.
Work collaboratively with the exams team and curriculum support to ensure accurate records, exam registrations, and schedules.
Plan opportunities for learners to experience out-of-classroom contexts such as placements, volunteering, visits to libraries, museums, and employment-based settings.
Support the development of exciting programmes that enable learners to gain new skills, qualifications, and knowledge aligned with their personal goals and employment aspirations.
Participate in key college and external marketing events to promote courses to new learners and employers.
Write detailed and accurate course outlines to support departmental and college promotion.
Conduct interviews and initial/diagnostic assessments for new and existing potential learners.
Attend and contribute to departmental, college, and external meetings as required. (Please note meeting attendance is paid in addition to the hourly rate at the set meeting rate.)
Keep up to date with internal and external assessments and examinations, maintaining appropriate records and liaising with the Exams team to support smooth operations.
Undertake and maintain training in Health & Safety, Equality & Diversity, Safeguarding, Prevent, and Data Protection/GDPR, escalating any concerns as appropriate.
Comply with the Professional Standards for Teachers and Trainers in Education and Training as per college policy.
Undertake other duties commensurate with the grade of the post, supporting the priorities and management of the College.
Take responsibility for Health & Safety within own work areas according to College policy.
Proactively manage own professional development in consultation with the Line Manager.
Carry out all duties in accordance with College policies including Equal Opportunities, Safeguarding, Data Protection, core values, behaviours, and confidentiality.
Work flexibly and efficiently as a proactive team member to achieve departmental and College strategic targets.
Support the improvement, growth, and sustainability of the College.
Experience
- Experience of teaching in Adult Education or Further Education post-16 college or training environment.
- Experience teaching a range of levels up to GCSE English/Maths, including preparation for GCSE and functional skills.
- Experience of quality improvement processes which support and develop practice.

Qualifications
- An appropriate teaching qualification for the Post 16 Sector (e.g. DET / Cert. Ed. or equivalent) and/or willingness to complete a Level 4 qualification within the first year of appointment.
- A qualification in the subject specialism to at least Level 4 (e.g. HND, First Degree), or in-depth knowledge with a minimum of 3 years’ substantial experience teaching English/Maths.
- Level 2 (GCSE or equivalent) qualifications in English and Mathematics.
- A1 Assessors qualification or equivalent.
- V1 Verifiers qualification or equivalent.
