Location
102 Petty France, London. Hybrid working arrangement with a minimum of two days per week in the office. Flexible working patterns and arrangements between base locations, Ministry of Justice Hubs, and home are supported. This role must be worked from within the UK.
Hours
Full-time, part-time, or job share options available. The role is not realistically suitable for less than full-time work.
Salary
£85,257 per annum, Grade 6 level.
About the Role
The Law Commission is seeking a Grade 6 Law Reform Team Manager to lead the Commercial and Common Law Team on a 12-month fixed-term appointment, with potential for extension or permanency. This is a senior leadership role involving management of a complex portfolio of law reform projects affecting individuals, businesses, and society. The postholder will work closely with the Law Commissioner and senior leaders to deliver high-quality law reform work, balancing detailed project management with strategic oversight. Key responsibilities include overseeing multiple projects to budget and timeline, ensuring integrity and quality, fostering a culture of evidence-based law reform, and leading a diverse team of approximately 12 staff. The role involves stakeholder engagement across government and external bodies, innovation in communication, and contributing to the Law Commission’s Senior Management Team. The Law Commission is an independent statutory body dedicated to keeping the law of England and Wales fair, modern, simple, and cost-effective through research, consultation, and recommendations for reform. This role offers a unique opportunity to influence significant legal and policy developments in England and Wales.
Experience
- Professional qualification as a solicitor, barrister, or Chartered Legal Executive qualified to practise in England and Wales, or equivalent legal ability demonstrated through comparable experience.
- Proven leadership skills with the ability to lead and motivate a diverse team.
- Experience managing complex law reform or legal projects involving multiple stakeholders.
- Strong stakeholder engagement skills with confidence in building and maintaining relationships across government and externally.
- Ability to apply strategic thinking and sound judgement to complex legal and policy issues.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to produce clear, evidenced advice and support lengthy legal publications.
- Project and programme management skills adaptable to changing priorities.

Qualifications
- Solicitor, barrister, or Chartered Legal Executive qualification to practise in England and Wales, or equivalent legal expertise.
- Desirable: Senior-level experience in private law, particularly commercial, chancery, or common law.
- Desirable: Experience of law reform work in England and Wales or comparable jurisdictions.
