About the Role

The Principal Fire Engineer role involves undertaking Fire Safety Engineering work, supporting design projects both within and outside the UK. This consultancy-based position focuses on desktop reviews of design projects at initial stages and supporting the fire safety discipline within Arcadis.

The role primarily serves the building sector, with opportunities to contribute to other sectors such as rail, reflecting Arcadis’ multidisciplinary nature and broad service offering. Key responsibilities include fire engineering design across various sectors, delivering projects within time and cost budgets, and collaborating with clients, architects, project managers, contractors, subcontractors, and authorities to provide practical and compliant fire engineering advice and solutions.

Typical activities include developing Fire Safety Strategy reports for new and existing buildings, conducting Means of Escape analysis (including evacuation time calculations, escape route assessments, and evacuation strategy development), and applying UK Fire Safety Regulations and Standards such as Approved Document B, BS 9999, BS 7974, BS 9991, BB100, and HTM 05. The role also requires keeping up to date with regulatory changes, understanding fire safety legislation and standards for rail projects (including London Underground and Network Rail standards), and applying risk-based interpretations of fire safety documents and international codes such as NFPA standards.

Additional duties include third-party review and design verification, attending internal and external design team meetings, supporting Fire Risk Assessment report development for building and rail sectors, leading fire projects and teams, assisting with bidding and fee proposals, and mentoring junior staff and graduates to support their professional growth. Experience
Recent demonstrable experience working in a range of sectors within a technical fire safety engineering environment, applying fire safety engineering skills in a client-focused setting. Proven ability to work confidently with new and existing clients, building strong relationships internally and externally. Robust problem-solving skills with accountability for assigned tasks. Experience writing reports, presentations, and managing client and internal communications. Experience working in medium to large multi-disciplinary environments. Membership or working towards membership of relevant professional institutions such as IFE, CABE, RICS, IET, CIOB.

Qualifications
Chartered Engineer (CEng) status or working towards it. Additional desirable skills include knowledge of hazard identification, ALARP principles, PAS 9980, EWS1 forms, Façade Engineering, the Building Safety Act 2022, Fire Risk Assessment principles, fire dynamics, heat transfer, smoke behaviour in enclosed environments (especially underground and tunnels), Active and Passive Fire Protection systems, and fire modelling simulation tools such as CFAST, FDS, Pyrosim, and SMARTFIRE.
