As a Principal Public Health Specialist, you will work closely with the Consultants in Public Health, Deputy Director, and Director of Public Health to improve health outcomes and reduce health inequalities in Hackney and the City of London. You will lead key areas of work and named programmes to plan, deliver, and evaluate Public Health initiatives.

This role will focus on children and young people’s public health, covering the full spectrum from preconception, maternity, early years, school-age children, to those up to 24 years with special educational needs and disabilities. You will independently lead programmes, build and manage relationships with a broad range of partners, and work strategically to assess and meet local health needs. While the primary focus is children and young people, you will have the ability to work across all public health domains.

The role is based within a joint City and Hackney team, employed by Hackney Council. You will collaborate with services and managers across all council directorates and the City of London Corporation, embedding Public Health responsibilities within both organisations and supporting the integrated care system by providing public health expertise to improve population health outcomes.

Experience
You will have solid experience in tackling health inequalities and a proven track record of leading work both autonomously and within teams. Experience in project management and programme delivery is essential. Commissioning experience is desirable.

You will possess excellent verbal and written communication skills and demonstrate tact, compassion, and expertise to work effectively in a diverse community where health inequalities persist. You will be committed to ongoing professional development and able to build and maintain strong partnerships across multiple organisations.

Qualifications
You will be educated to postgraduate level or equivalent in public health or a related subject area, or have equivalent experience within public health or a related field. You will have a thorough knowledge of the causes of ill health and inequalities, combined with an understanding of public health principles and methodologies.
