About the Role
Join Islington Council’s Building Control team and help us deliver on our mission to ensure that every building in our borough is safe, sustainable, and built to last. The Council’s Capital Delivery Team has a programme of work needing dedicated Building Control input to ensure smooth delivery of its projects. You will work closely with the team to provide regulatory oversight and ensure all work complies with Building Regulations through issuing appropriate certification.
As a Principal Registered Building Inspector (Class 2F or above), you will play a pivotal role in ensuring buildings are safe, compliant, and built to the highest standards. You will manage a varied caseload of building schemes, from new building work to complex regularisations, collaborating with applicants, agents, and professionals across the sector.
Key duties include undertaking detailed inspections of building work in progress, ensuring compliance at plan checking and final inspection stages, supervising and mentoring other Registered Building Inspectors, progressing applications and recommending actions leading to completion certificates, and upholding the Registered Building Inspectors’ Code of Conduct while contributing to service improvements.

Experience
- Extensive knowledge of building construction, materials, and legislation
- Proven experience managing complex building control caseloads including large-scale commercial and residential projects
- Experience supervising and supporting technical staff
- Ability to drive service delivery improvements
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including explaining technical and legal requirements to diverse audiences
- IT proficiency and strong record management skills
- Financial awareness and ability to manage resources effectively
- Commitment to maintaining CPD and upholding professional standards
- Willingness to participate in out-of-hours rotas

Qualifications
- Level 6 qualification in Building Control or equivalent degree in a relevant subject such as Building Surveying, Construction, or Structural Engineering
- Registered Building Inspector status (Class 2A–3H) through the Building Safety Regulator, with Class 2F as the minimum requirement
- Membership of a relevant professional body (RICS, CABE, CIOB, or equivalent) with evidence of Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
