About the Role
Hackney is one of the most dynamic and progressive local authorities in the UK. We are a resilient, vibrant, and creative borough in the heart of London, with strong, diverse communities and a powerful set of shared values. Over the past twenty years, the Council has built up first-class services, outstanding public infrastructure, and a reputation for excellence, innovation, and ambition. We are leading the way on essential work such as our fight for equity in Hackney with a particular focus on becoming an actively anti-racist borough. Our work also proactively addresses fairness across gender, neurodiversity, and the poverty divide.
The Leisure, Parks and Green Spaces Service is part of the Housing, Climate and Economy Directorate and delivers quality services and programmes for residents in Hackney. It is responsible for five main areas: Events, Leisure, Parks & Green Spaces, Projects & Programmes, and Sport & Physical Activity. The Service contributes to “Working Together for a Better Hackney” by focusing on its core vision, purpose and aims, embracing and demonstrating the Council’s core values.
The Projects & Programmes team is seeking a Project Manager to lead a variety of projects that will benefit the borough. You will be responsible for turning ideas into finished solutions, working closely with colleagues from the Parks Development and Parks Operations teams. Projects will vary in size with a focus on leisure and green spaces, playing a key role in making Hackney a place for everyone.
Day to day, you will conduct site visits and meetings across Hackney and beyond, plan and deliver projects ensuring compliance with statutory, legal, and procurement frameworks. You will manage complex budgets including internal and external funding sources and demonstrate sound contract and financial management.
This role requires strong problem-solving and organisational skills, sound judgement, and outstanding interpersonal skills to engage a wide range of stakeholders internally and externally. You will motivate contractors, collaborate with fellow Officers, and work closely with the public to build community trust and drive excellence across all areas. A good understanding of Planning, Procurement, and Construction is essential, along with experience working on capital projects and physical builds.
This role suits a project officer ready for career progression. Ideally, candidates will hold a Project Management qualification and have experience in a Leisure or Green Spaces environment.
As a Council, our most outstanding asset is our staff, who are highly dedicated to serving our residents and committed to our organisational goals. We are working towards a vision to be a place for everyone; where residents and staff can be proud, where diversity is celebrated, and everyone feels valued, included, and involved. We seek people who are Proud, Ambitious, Pioneering, Open, Proactive, and Inclusive.
Experience
Proven experience managing projects within Leisure, Parks, or Green Spaces environments is highly desirable. Experience working on capital projects and physical builds is essential. Demonstrable knowledge of Planning, Procurement, and Construction processes is required. Experience managing complex budgets and contract management is expected.
