About the Role
Barnet Council is proud of its vibrant communities, excellent schools, and vast green spaces. We are committed to building on these strengths and delivering excellent services to residents, businesses, consumers, and visitors. The Environmental Health - Consumer and Public Protection Service sits within the Assurance and Public Protection Directorate and operates in a modern, hybrid working environment that balances office attendance for key meetings with flexible working arrangements.
Following a recent reorganisation, we have a new structure focused on a risk-based and proportionate approach to Environmental Health service delivery and statutory functions. We are seeking a dedicated Public Protection Officer to join the Public Health & Noise Nuisance Team to help create a healthier and more pleasant environment for all residents of Barnet.
The successful candidate will investigate nuisance issues including noise, smoke, odour, and light, as well as public health concerns related to drainage, refuse, and pests. This role involves front line ‘witnessing’ duties, carrying out visits and gathering evidence of reported breaches. You will be expected to work independently with minimal supervision and demonstrate excellent communication skills, including confidence in handling potentially confrontational situations. Attendance at court as a witness may be required.
Experience
A good standard of knowledge of legislation pertaining to statutory nuisance and demonstrable experience in this area.
About you
- Confident in dealing with enforcement issues
- Effective communication and investigative skills
- Willingness to tackle non-compliance
- Aptitude for promoting a culture of close collaboration
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Skilled in creating and maintaining working relationships both internally and externally
Qualifications
Relevant qualifications or demonstrable experience related to public health, environmental health, or noise nuisance enforcement are desirable.
