About the Role
Hackney is one of the most dynamic and progressive local authorities in the UK. We are a resilient, vibrant, and creative borough in the heart of London, with strong, diverse communities and a powerful set of shared values. Over the past twenty years, the Council has built up first-class services, outstanding public infrastructure, and a reputation for excellence, innovation, and ambition. We are leading the way on essential work such as our fight for equity in Hackney with a particular focus on becoming an actively anti-racist borough. Our proactive approach also addresses fairness across gender, neurodiversity, and poverty divides.
Hackney is one of Britain’s most exciting and fastest-changing boroughs. We have transformed the reputation not only of the Council but of Hackney itself. Our vision is to make the borough a place for everyone, supporting a thriving community where all residents feel included, involved, and able to lead healthy and successful lives.
As Service Accountant, you will operate within one of the Directorate Financial Management teams, playing a key role in providing financial support to services and working alongside the Group Accountant to establish robust internal controls during a challenging economic period in the public sector. You will proactively provide high-quality, informed financial advice at all levels to facilitate operational decision-making, challenging and justifying decisions where necessary to ensure continued delivery for Hackney’s residents.
You will be responsible for ensuring the three main pillars of the annual budget cycle—budget setting, budget monitoring, and closing of accounts—are completed for a range of services, collaborating closely with service managers to achieve this. In return, you will have the opportunity to rise to the challenge, develop your skills, and progress your career within a vibrant and well-performing Council.
At Hackney, we offer a stimulating, fast-moving, and supportive work environment that encourages the use and development of your skills within a high-profile organisation. We value staff dedication and commitment to our organisational goals and look for individuals who are proud, ambitious, pioneering, open, proactive, and inclusive.
