About the Role
The Sikh Chaplain will provide faith, belief, and pastoral care to prisoners and staff within their own faith tradition, while also supporting people of other faiths and none as part of a multifaith chaplaincy team. The role involves delivering faith and non-faith-based courses in line with PSI 05/2016 Faith and Pastoral Care for Prisoners or its successor policy framework. The Chaplain will work collaboratively with colleagues to ensure these policies are effectively implemented and contribute to assurance processes for senior management.
Key responsibilities include providing spiritual guidance, planning and leading worship and faith-specific meetings, facilitating religious programmes, and supporting prisoners and staff through pastoral care and crisis resolution. The Chaplain will nurture volunteers, promote faith awareness, represent the chaplaincy team in meetings, and actively support the Assessment, Care in Custody and Teamwork (ACCT) process.
This is a non-rotational, non-operational role without line management or supervisory responsibilities. The Chaplain will also engage with local Sikh faith communities to aid offender resettlement and may take on additional roles such as Family Liaison Officer or volunteer coordinator as required.
The role requires maintaining one’s own spiritual health through private prayer, reflection, study, and retreat.
