About the Role
As a Support Worker within Westminster City Council’s Children’s Services Parenting Team, you will play a vital role in supporting young people and families across Westminster. Working alongside Parenting Practitioners, you will assist with the organisation and coordination of parenting programmes, update case notes on databases, and occasionally write reports. Your contribution will be key in team meetings and in recording parental engagement, all aimed at improving the lives of vulnerable children and young people by helping their families provide safe and supportive environments as children grow into adulthood.
The service is part of an outstanding-rated Early Help sector, focused on reducing the number of children taken into care, increasing school attendance, building parental resilience, and lowering youth involvement in crime. This is achieved by promoting parent employability, addressing public health priorities for young people, and delivering essential support and relationship work to equip families to care safely for their children.
Small caseloads allow practitioners to build strong, positive relationships with families, focusing on their strengths. The team culture promotes respect, openness, discussion, challenge, and curiosity, always keeping children and families at the heart of the work.
As part of your role, you will be expected to engage in relevant training, uphold equal opportunities policies, stay current with government legislation and departmental policies, and treat all individuals with dignity and respect in a non-discriminatory manner.
Experience
Experience working in a support services role within a local authority or related organisation is essential. You should be capable of providing a confidential and professional service and be flexible to meet the demands of the role. Experience interacting in community safety environments or with young people involved in serious youth violence is highly desirable. Ability to work in partnership with public sector, private sector, voluntary, and community organisations is a plus.
About you
You will be highly organised, able to work on your own initiative, and possess excellent verbal and written communication skills. You should have well-developed knowledge of Corporate and Children’s IT systems as well as proficiency in Microsoft Office software. The ability to work effectively across cultural and linguistic barriers is important. You must be confident in identifying risks to children related to parenting capacity affected by substance misuse, domestic violence, conflict, or mental health issues. Confidence in reporting and providing evidence in formal settings such as Family Proceedings courts and Child Protection case conferences is required.
Qualifications
You should hold A Level or NVQ Level 3 qualifications, along with either a degree or relevant work experience in a social care-related support services role.
