About the Role
The London Borough of Havering is seeking a motivated and highly skilled Qualified Teacher of Vision Impairment (QTVI) to join our professional, friendly, and enthusiastic Physical and Sensory Support Team within the SEND Education Support Service. This role involves working as part of a multidisciplinary team of specialist teachers and professionals across a range of educational settings, schools, and homes on a peripatetic basis. You will work with babies, children, young people, and their families from birth to 25 years.

The role includes supporting parents to understand the implications of their child’s vision impairment, supporting school-aged children in educational settings, liaising with other relevant agencies, contributing to EHCP requests and report writing, and delivering vision impairment training.

The successful candidate will provide specialist teaching, advice, and support to children and young people with vision impairment, their families, schools, and settings across Havering to ensure the educational implications of their vision impairment are understood and effectively managed. You will also plan and deliver specialist training to staff, work collaboratively with multi-agency teams, and participate in the development of SEND Support Service policies and practices.

Experience
Qualified Teacher of Vision Impairment (QTVI) with experience working with children with vision impairment across age ranges, or qualified and experienced teachers with substantial knowledge and interest in special educational needs willing to undertake training to become a QTVI.

- Ability to manage an individual caseload of children and young people aged 0-25 with vision impairment, prioritising and managing competing demands
- Excellent interpersonal skills, flexibility, strong organisation, ability to work independently and meet deadlines
- Commitment to providing balanced, unbiased advice to children, young people, and families to enable informed choices
- Ability to build strong, collaborative working relationships and use professional expertise to improve outcomes
- Understanding of and commitment to inclusive education and effective multi-agency teamwork
- Knowledge of Braille and interest in developing Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) and Assistive Technology (AT)
- Ability to work closely with children, families, education staff, health professionals, and local authority SEND services to ensure high-quality, accurate, impartial specialist information
- Commitment to maintaining accurate records and writing specialist reports to inform planning including EHCPs

Qualifications
- Specialist, mandatory qualification in teaching children with Vision Impairment (QTVI) or willingness to undertake training leading to QTVI status
