Job overview
The newly established Genomics AI Network (GAIN) will be jointly delivered by the South East Genomic Medicine Service Alliance, and will act at the intersection of NHS genomic medicine and Artificial Intelligence (AI) development and translational research to support the implementation of AI technology solutions in healthcare.
The post-holder will directly contribute to the delivery of exemplar work programmes at the interface of translational research and NHS implementation in: data mining and natural language processing, variant interrogation, and AI deployment platforms in order to support evidence generation for adoption.
Named projects include but are not limited to:
Building upon the capabilities of the GSTT AI Deployment Engine (AIDE) platform to integrate genomic AI algorithms, improve variant calling in genomic analysis, and enhance the mapping of phenotype to genotype through the extraction of higher-level diagnostic concepts embedded in medical images and EHRs.
Building upon the capabilities of the GSTT Cogstack platform, developing automated phenotype characterisation pipelines from unstructured clinical data integrating the controlled vocabulary of genomic phenotyping (Human Phenotype Ontology), to drive interoperability of clinical and genetic patient data for specialist care and genetic diagnosis.
Main duties of the job
The duties are summarised as:
Oversee AI Integration in Genomics: Lead the integration and application of artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques in translational genomics projects
Strategic Vision and Leadership: Develop and execute a strategic vision for AI applications in genomics, providing leadership and direction to cross-functional teams to ensure collaboration and synergy.
Collaboration with Researchers and Clinicians: Work closely with genomic researchers, clinicians, and stakeholders to identify and implement AI-driven solutions that address critical challenges in genomics.
Training, Development, and Technical Support: Provide mentorship and training to team members, offering technical support and troubleshooting for clinical data systems to build a high-performing team.
Project and Quality Management: Oversee the planning, execution, and delivery of AI genomics projects, ensuring they are completed on time, within scope, and meet quality standards through testing and validation.
Stakeholder Engagement and Reporting: Engage with internal and external stakeholders to promote AI initiatives in genomics, maintaining comprehensive documentation and generating regular reports on data quality, system performance, and project progress.
Working for our organisation
This role sits within the AI, Data & Digital Innovation function of the Chief Medical Officer’s Office (CMO). It is made up of data science, technology and digital transformation experts, operating as part of the wider King Health partner’s (KHP) group.
The teams work on some externally funded programmes - that develop and implement AI platforms, with the aim to achieve better outcomes for patients’ diagnosis and treatment, improve clinical and operational workflows and drive innovative healthcare research. This includes the London Artificial Intelligence Centre for Value-Based Healthcare - a consortium of NHS, academic and industry partners led by Guy’s & St Thomas’, King’s College London and KCH in partnership with 10 NHS Trusts and 4 universities.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Management and Leadership
Prioritise own work in accordance with Departmental and Trust priorities and external demands. Meet expected results by using own initiative and following general principles and applicable regulations, standards and guidelines.
Support and participate in relevant boards, committees and governance structures, providing necessary technical expertise and representing the Department.
Keep careful records of work performed and materials and reports created, including statistical reports, charts and diagrams.
Manage and coordinate the scientific and technical work of staff engaged in projects, to ensure project objectives and targets are met. This includes the management of project-specific resources (money and equipment) and the recruitment of project and other development staff, including the management of secondments.
Manage staff assigned to the postholder, including short-term research staff. Recruit, appraise and develop these staff.
Manage income and expenditure budgets. Manage equipment and software. Manage grant accounts and special funds.
Negotiate, manage, and develop external contracts for services with other healthcare and education providers.
Supervise and take responsibility for the work of other staff when they are performing work under the postholder’s direction.
Research
Undertake research activity as aligned to the Genomics AI Network’s mission to output exemplar work programmes at the interface of translational research and NHS implementation
Initiate, develop and engage in research and development in collaboration with the Trust, King’s Health Partners and external organisations. Obtain research funding from NHS, research council, charitable, and industrial sources. Translate research and development into clinical service.
Disseminate the outcome of research and development activity. Publish and present scientific papers in peer reviewed journals and at scientific conferences]
Professional
Enrol in appropriate Continuing Professional Development programmes. Attend suitable seminars and courses as part of personal development and to further the work of the Department.
Maintain current knowledge of applicable regulations and monitor regulatory affairs and the effect changes will have to own work
Ensure all activities are carried out within a quality framework and meet regulatory requirements.
Organise scientific meetings and presentations.
Contribute to national and international developments, including the development of international standards and provision of advice to government agencies and professional organisations and to international bodies as appropriate.
Participate in the affairs of the digital health community nationally, including development and professional validation of education and training programmes. Take on other training and assessment roles as appropriate.
