St Thomas’ has one of the largest critical care units in the UK and one of the busiest emergency departments in London. It is also home to Evelina London Children’s Hospital. Evelina London cares for local children in Lambeth and Southwark and provides specialist services across south east England including cardiac, renal and critical care services. We lead a number of specialist service networks aiming to ensure children are treated locally where possible, but have access to specialist expertise when they need it. Our community services include health visiting, school nursing and support for families of children with long-term conditions. Our adult community services teams deliver care at the heart of the local communities we serve, working in partnership with GPs, local authorities and other healthcare and voluntary sector organisations. Working with our partners in Lambeth and Southwark, we are focusing on new ways of working to improve care for local patients. In February 2021 the Royal Brompton and Harefield joined Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, bringing together world-leading expertise in the care and research of heart and lung disease. Our merger provides a once in a generation opportunity to build a lasting, world-renowned heart and lung centre, providing the highest quality care for patients and conducting world-leading research. Job overview This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic Data Analyst to work within a dynamic, supportive, and multi-disciplinary team. The successful post holder will play a key role in the use of modern and innovative, professional tools and processes to deliver actionable insights and analytics that enable data informed decisions to improve the Trust’s efficiency and productivity in order to ultimately ensure improved patient experiences and health outcomes. The applicant will be involved in discussions with operational and clinical colleagues from project scoping through to embedding new ways of working as business as usual. The analysis provided will be vital in targeting efforts to the right areas to deliver the greatest service improvements and therefore a close working relationship with the clinical and corporate groups will be needed to understand how the different services operate. Main duties of the job The Operational Productivity Unit is tasked with three specific roles: • Working with Clinical Groups and Corporate functions to provide insights and intelligence for productivity opportunities, including demand and activity data; • Provide regular, central monitoring and reporting of opportunities; • Support capability and efficiency literacy. The challenge(s) to the Unit are varied, including but not limited to being able to: • Establish rich, trusted data; • Go beyond the identification of productivity opportunities and enable the delivery of efficiencies (including cashable savings). Mitigating these challenges requires the Unit to align with and enhance existing efforts whilst identifying and supporting new initiatives. The Unit will work collaboratively across the Trust to provide data insights on the productivity of functions/ groups; support/ monitor gate-way reviews of productivity improvements (including CIP); and support capability building. Detailed job description and main responsibilities · Develop analytical tools that drive actionable insights (from short term cash savings to longer term transformational schemes) to support business planning and decision making in operational improvement across the Trust. · Evaluate and analyse complex and contentious issues using expertise in analytic tools, benchmarking using Model hospital, GIRFT and other sources of healthcare data & working with partners including members of the ICS. · Use robust problem-solving skills to find and understand root causes of problems and identify opportunities for improvement. · Develop and implement clinical analytics tools to improve productivity outcomes across the Trust. This will include managing projects from inception to completion and developing strategies for analytical transformation. · Support capability building around analytics within finance and the wider analytic teams · Lead and work with others to use data to understand and track complex interdependencies between different initiatives and different parts of the organisation or sector. · Evaluate care pathways and processes; facilitating collaborative working across organisational boundaries ensuring that the focus is on enhancing value and reducing waste. · Support the development of analytical capability and capacity within the the Operational Productivity & Costing teams, as well as the wider finance and analytic teams Person specification Education & Experience Essential criteria Masters' Degree in Data Field or equivalent experience Experience working in NHS data settings Desirable criteria Evidence of ongoing education in data or project management Other professional certifications Stakeholder Engagement Essential criteria Experience working with multidisciplinary stakeholders, documenting technical requirements, delivering digital or analytic value to requirements Familiarity With Analytic Tools Essential criteria Experience with SQL/PowerBI Understanding EPIC and Data Flows Desirable criteria Experience with R and/or Python EPIC accreditation Productivity Essential criteria Experience combining datasets to build a narrative and provide actionable insights/recommendations Understanding of the productivity challenges facing the NHS Desirable criteria Experience working with finance, ESR, and activity datasets Background/understanding of improvement methodologies and language Personal Attributes Essential criteria Exhibits Trust Values Comfort communicating complex analytic concepts to a range of non-analytic stakeholders Experience coaching/upskilling colleagues on data concepts and analytic tools Desirable criteria Comfort working with and presenting to senior leadership Guy’s and St Thomas’ celebrates, respects and values the diversity of its staff and patients.
