As part of our commitment to provide care closer to home, in 2017 we also opened a cancer centre and a kidney treatment centre at Queen Mary’s Hospital in Sidcup. St Thomas’ has one of the largest critical care units in the UK and one of the busiest emergency departments in London. It is also home to Evelina London Children’s Hospital. Evelina London cares for local children in Lambeth and Southwark and provides specialist services across south east England including cardiac, renal and critical care services. We lead a number of specialist service networks aiming to ensure children are treated locally where possible, but have access to specialist expertise when they need it. Our community services include health visiting, school nursing and support for families of children with long-term conditions. Our adult community services teams deliver care at the heart of the local communities we serve, working in partnership with GPs, local authorities and other healthcare and voluntary sector organisations. Working with our partners in Lambeth and Southwark, we are focusing on new ways of working to improve care for local patients. In February 2021 the Royal Brompton and Harefield joined Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, bringing together world-leading expertise in the care and research of heart and lung disease. Our merger provides a once in a generation opportunity to build a lasting, world-renowned heart and lung centre, providing the highest quality care for patients and conducting world-leading research. We have an exciting opportunity to appoint a new fixed-term Deputy Director of Operations. We are recruiting to this new fixed-term role as Evelina London’s Director of Operations and Improvement is being seconded part-time into the Operational Delivery Director role as Evelina London Children’s Hospital prepares to become the home of our region’s specialist children’s cancer services. We are advertising this as an 18-month role in the first instance and there may be an opportunity to extend. Main duties of the job Job Summary: Lead the design and operation of the Clinical Groups performance management framework and provide assurance that it is effective Lead a data-based approach to performance improvement Lead cross-Clinical Group / pan-directorate plans and initiatives, including the effective utilisation of resources and assets, on behalf of the Director of Operations Provide senior leadership across the Clinical Group including contributions to Trust and system, influencing service design and delivery across the organisation Monitor the performance and resource utilisation across the directorates and support the introduction of remedial steps where necessary. Review the operational performance of the clinical directorates and supporting the Director of Operations in the performance appraisal of clinical and professional staff within the directorates (where appropriate). Develop the leadership potential of all staff. Represent the Trust within the NHS and wider community, and with partner organisations, and working closely with them to institute integrated working in the best interests of patient care. Detailed job description and main responsibilities The role reports to the group Director of Operations & Improvement and will be responsible for leading and improving the performance portfolio and over all elective recovery. This will include oversight of the long wait reduction programme, theatre and operational productivity and over all throughput as well as supporting the day to day running of the Groups clinical services. The role will support the Director of Operations & Improvement in ensuring that operational services across the Clinical Group are delivered to a high standard for our patients and performance across all quality, access, people and financial domains is achieved. The role will work closely with the Trust Director of Performance and Information as well as colleagues across the Clinical Group and wider organisation to ensure that a collaborative approach is used in the achievement of key performance and quality indicators. To succeed in this role, candidates need to be able to build confidence across the organisation as well as with external partners. Key responsibilities will be to challenge, support and develop the directorate management teams ensuring robust systems for performance and financial management and quality governance are in place. This role will have a strong focus on improvement, supporting teams to innovate and deliver quality improvements for our patients The role would suit a driven, ambitious and patient centric leader looking for a stepping stone to a Director of Operations or other senior operational role. Clinical Group Deputy Director of Operations Responsibilities There will be 2 Deputy Director of Operations portfolios within the Evelina London Women’s & Children’s Clinical Group, these will include specific directorate responsibilities, alongside Clinical Group-wide responsibilities. The nature and composition of these portfolios will naturally evolve over time and be subject to change in discussion with the postholder(s).
