St Thomas’ has one of the largest critical care units in the UK and one of the busiest emergency departments in London. It is also home to Evelina London Children’s Hospital. Evelina London cares for local children in Lambeth and Southwark and provides specialist services across south east England including cardiac, renal and critical care services. We lead a number of specialist service networks aiming to ensure children are treated locally where possible, but have access to specialist expertise when they need it. Our community services include health visiting, school nursing and support for families of children with long-term conditions. Our adult community services teams deliver care at the heart of the local communities we serve, working in partnership with GPs, local authorities and other healthcare and voluntary sector organisations. Working with our partners in Lambeth and Southwark, we are focusing on new ways of working to improve care for local patients. In February 2021 the Royal Brompton and Harefield joined Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, bringing together world-leading expertise in the care and research of heart and lung disease. Job overview We are looking for a highly motivated and dynamic individual to who can join the directorate management team to provide clear, compassionate and inspirational leadership across our children’s surgical services. We are a supportive and friendly team, striving to deliver excellent and innovative care to our local children and their families. The successful candidate will work alongside our Clinical Director, General Manager and Head of Nursing s to supporting the operational delivery of our services. This will include quality and productivity performance management, leading projects, and supporting workforce development. The post holder will need to be able to influence and engage with stakeholder partners across the system and possess a clear voice and vision for the communities we serve. They should have excellent communication skills with a record of service delivery, quality improvement and workforce development. Main duties of the job The Deputy General Manager (DGM) is accountable to the General Manager. The purpose of the DGM is to support and deputise for the General Manager and Head of Nursing to ensure that both strategic and operational demands are met. The DGM role will be accountable to the General Manager for the delivery of clinical services within and across the directorate, for assessing the impact of change and making decisions, balancing risks and priorities, and for providing advice to the General Manager and the Directorate Management Team. The post holder will support the Clinical Director and General Manager with the development and delivery of a strategic vision and ensure service changes meet internal and external expectations and standards. The post holder will be responsible for implementing and managing systems and processes to ensure that all services are delivered in accordance with Trust-wide policies. The post has direct line management responsibility for the directorate service managers and the delivery and performance management of those services. In the first instance this will include the review and, where necessary, the development of mechanisms for performance management at service level, workforce development and representing the GM and HON in their absence.
