Description
Guy’s and St Thomas’ is among the UK’s busiest and most successful NHS foundation trusts. We provide a full range of hospital and community services for people in south London and as well as specialist care for patients from further afield including cancer, renal, orthopaedic, respiratory and cardiovascular services.
Guy’s is home to the largest dental school in Europe and a £160 million Cancer Centre opened in 2016. As part of our commitment to provide care closer to home, in 2017 we also opened a cancer centre and a kidney treatment centre at Queen Mary’s Hospital in Sidcup. St Thomas’ has one of the largest critical care units in the UK and one of the busiest emergency departments in London. It is also home to Evelina London Children’s Hospital.
Evelina London cares for local children in Lambeth and Southwark and provides specialist services across south east England including cardiac, renal and critical care services. We lead a number of specialist service networks aiming to ensure children are treated locally where possible, but have access to specialist expertise when they need it. Our community services include health visiting, school nursing and support for families of children with long-term conditions.
Our adult community services teams deliver care at the heart of the local communities we serve, working in partnership with GPs, local authorities and other healthcare and voluntary sector organisations. Working with our partners in Lambeth and Southwark, we are focusing on new ways of working to improve care for local patients.
In February 2021 the Royal Brompton and Harefield joined Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, bringing together world-leading expertise in the care and research of heart and lung disease. Our merger provides a once in a generation opportunity to build a lasting, world-renowned heart and lung centre, providing the highest quality care for patients and conducting world-leading research.

Job overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a secondment for the Deputy General Manager in Medical Specialties. This 4 month secondment (with the potential to extend to 6 months) will lead on the operational and performance management responsibility across the trust wide administrative services in medical specialties (eRS, RMC, patient access team and centralised outpatients). The successful candidate would also take the lead on the improvements required with our referral processes post EPIC.
The post holder will be expected to work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders to ensure effective management of interdependencies and delivery of agreed objectives. The post holder will be required to work with service management teams across the trust to investigate and resolve issues relating to our referral processes post EPIC.
The services within the centralised booking and scheduling teams are going through a period of transformation and this is an opportunity to support and shape this transition and develop new ways of working.
Main duties of the job
To deliver in this role, you will need experience of working within a multi-professional NHS team and collaborative working with internal and external stakeholders. You will need to have a strong commitment to improving performance whilst remaining passionate about quality and safety. You will have a strong proven track record of inclusive leadership and staff management. You will have a proven history of successful operational management experience, and will demonstrate a high standard of communication and organisational skills, and an ability to use your initiative.
This role will also have opportunities to lead on trust wide service improvements relating to referral management.

The Medical Specialties Directorate is an integral part of the Integrated and Specialist Medicine (ISM) Clinical Group. The Clinical Group brings together a number of Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust services that work collaboratively across the hospital and with our partners to provide excellence in clinical care, research and academia. The directorate hosts a number of trust wide administrative services which this role would have operational responsibility for.

Evidence of leading successful project and / or operational performance and improvement; including business case preparation, service initiation / commissioning, contract negotiation, and the development and monitoring of output and outcome measures
