About the Role
Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust is one of the UK’s busiest and most successful NHS trusts, providing a wide range of hospital and community services across south London and specialist care nationally. The Heart, Lung & Critical Care (HLCC) finance team is seeking an experienced finance leader to join as Deputy Head of Finance. This senior role leads the Clinical Group's finance team, providing expert financial guidance and support to 16 team members and deputising for the Head of Finance.

The role involves delivering clear, accessible financial advice to non-finance stakeholders, strong negotiation and influencing skills to maintain sustainable financial performance, and excellent analytical and organisational abilities to support high-quality business partnering in a fast-paced environment. This position is ideal for a candidate with significant business partnering experience in a complex acute care setting looking to progress into a challenging leadership role.

The Clinical Group comprises six directorates across Royal Brompton, Harefield, and Guy’s and St Thomas’ sites, with an annual turnover of £750m and 4,900 staff. The group provides outpatient, diagnostic, inpatient, critical care, and specialist services supported by a multidisciplinary Clinical Group Board.

Key responsibilities include leading financial management for designated directorates, overseeing month-end processes, supporting financial planning and long-term projects, managing financial reporting and analysis, and providing expert advice on complex financial matters. The role also involves staff leadership, training, mentoring, and contributing to Trust-wide productivity and efficiency initiatives.

Requirements

Experience
- Significant post-qualification experience in a senior finance role
- Proven track record working with senior clinical and non-clinical NHS leaders
- Experience leading, challenging, and influencing financial plans, business cases, policies, and procedures
- Demonstrated leadership of teams including recruitment, appraisals, mentoring, and performance management
- In-depth knowledge of NHS accounting, reporting, and relevant financial legislation and guidance
- Experience interpreting NHSE/I financial legislation and advising on implementation
- Desirable: Experience in a similar role within a large, complex acute trust

About you
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, able to present complex financial information clearly to non-finance staff including directors
- Ability to work autonomously within national and internal reporting frameworks, prioritising effectively
- Strong analytical skills to interpret complex financial data and provide clear recommendations
- Commitment to continuous process improvement and reporting enhancements
- Strong negotiation and influencing skills at senior levels
- Effective team leader who leads by example to ensure high-quality outputs

Qualifications
- Essential: CCAB qualified
- Essential: Masters degree or equivalent relevant experience
- Desirable: Commitment to ongoing professional development and training
