About the Role
Camden Council is seeking a Deputy Team Leader to join our Development Management team on a 1-year fixed term basis, covering maternity leave with the possibility of extension depending on service needs. This role offers the opportunity to contribute to the future of our vibrant community by ensuring a responsive, high-performing, and top-tier Development Management service. Flexible working options are available, with occasional meetings and site visits outside normal office hours as required.
This position is ideal for an experienced planning professional looking to develop people management skills while leading pivotal planning applications that deliver positive outcomes for Camden and its communities. You will support Area Team Managers and take line management responsibility for a number of planners.
You will manage your own caseload, primarily consisting of a small number of large-scale or high-profile major schemes, leading negotiations to secure strategic benefits for the borough. Your strategic approach will strengthen internal and external relationships, fostering collaboration. As the expert on planning advice, processes, legislation, and Camden's policies, you will empower confident decision-making and ensure a responsive, high-performing Development Management Service that meets community needs.
Experience
Proven experience handling complex planning applications, preferably within a local authority setting. Experience in people management and project management is essential.

Enthusiastic, organised, and personable with strong communication and negotiation skills. You should have a genuine care for residents and an understanding of how local government operates in a diverse urban environment. The ideal candidate will appreciate the political context of local development and its impact on people and places. Ability to find smart solutions to complex problems and build strong relationships both within and outside the council is key. Leadership and mentoring skills are a must.
Qualifications
A recognised RTPI qualification is essential. A good understanding of the London planning system and up-to-date knowledge of planning policy and legislation are expected.
