Description
Guy’s and St Thomas’ is among the UK’s busiest and most successful NHS foundation trusts. We provide a full range of hospital and community services for people in south London and as well as specialist care for patients from further afield including cancer, renal, orthopaedic, respiratory and cardiovascular services.
Guy’s is home to the largest dental school in Europe and a £160 million Cancer Centre opened in 2016. As part of our commitment to provide care closer to home, in 2017 we also opened a cancer centre and a kidney treatment centre at Queen Mary’s Hospital in Sidcup. St Thomas’ has one of the largest critical care units in the UK and one of the busiest emergency departments in London. It is also home to Evelina London Children’s Hospital.
Evelina London cares for local children in Lambeth and Southwark and provides specialist services across south east England including cardiac, renal and critical care services. We lead a number of specialist service networks aiming to ensure children are treated locally where possible, but have access to specialist expertise when they need it. Our community services include health visiting, school nursing and support for families of children with long-term conditions.
Our adult community services teams deliver care at the heart of the local communities we serve, working in partnership with GPs, local authorities and other healthcare and voluntary sector organisations. Working with our partners in Lambeth and Southwark, we are focusing on new ways of working to improve care for local patients.
In February 2021 the Royal Brompton and Harefield joined Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, bringing together world-leading expertise in the care and research of heart and lung disease. Job overview
We are looking for a highly motivated and experienced General Manager to join and lead the Non-Emergency Patient Transport Service (NEPTS) department at Guy's and St Thomas'.
This is a key role within the dynamic NEPTS department and will lead in all matters relating to the operational management of NEPTS to include the management of both in house, self-delivered and contracted out services.
The post holder will be responsible for reviewing, implementing and managing all the processes to ensure that services are delivered in accordance with Trust wide policies and to ensure statutory compliance.
The role will influence the strategic development of the services and the delivery and control of the service specifications within the agreed budget parameters. The role holder is accountable for the delivery of high quality and cost effective services via agreed resources and they are expected to respond to future challenges and the requirement for efficiencies while making sustained performance improvements. The role is responsible for risk management and the implementation of consistent operational service standards.
The post holder will deputise for the Associate Director NEPTS when required.
Main duties of the job
Operational Performance Management
To have an up-to-date, expert level of knowledge and understanding of non-emergency patient transport services both in managing in house self-delivery models and those provided by external contractors.
Lead on the operational development of patient transport, ensuring an integrated approach with a range of departments and contacts across the Trust to ensure that customer requirements are delivered.
Human Resource Management
Manages all staff and ensures that all teams meet their set objectives and that staff have excellent opportunities for fulfilling their potential through development.
Develop workforce plans which anticipate service changes and developments which address recruitment, retention and workforce supply issues to minimise impact on the delivery of services.
Financial Management
Responsible for the setting and control of service budgets, regular forecasting, and achievement of all financial objectives set out within the business plans.
Ensure that all staff in patient transport for which post holder is responsible, comply with the Trust’s Standing Financial Instructions.
Information Management
Overall responsibility for the “Cleric” patient transport booking system, ensuring that the system is maintained, developed and produces information that is relevant and accurate.
Working for our organisation
Our patient transport service is available for patients who cannot travel to or from our hospitals using any other method of transport because of their medical or mobility condition, or because their medical condition would otherwise worsen. We provide the service to the Guys and St Thomas’s sites including Renal and cancer services.
We are a large busy and friendly team with our own in-house transport team. We support each other and constantly strive to look for improvements in making our service the best it can possibly be for patients. We are part of the ISO9001 standards and with the processes we have in place our yearly external audits have enabled us to achieve positive results.

Masters degree or equivalent professional qualification or demonstratable relevant experience.
Demonstrable knowledge of NEPTS service management.
Experience
Essential criteria
Evidence of managing NEPTS at a senior level in a large, complex healthcare environment, including staff management, financial management and change management.
Demonstratable success in delivering change and performance with and through teams by engaging them in the strategic direction and delivery plans, establishing clear work priorities with them, delegating effectively, ensuring a capability to deliver, monitoring performance and giving feedback.
Ability to think and plan strategically, tactically and creatively, and to prioritise work programs in the face of competing demands.
Ability to manage and deliver to deadlines and within resources.
Ability to collaborate constructively with internal and external partners to create the conditions for successful partnership working.
