Description
Job overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a South East Regional Results Coordinator for the Generation Study, hosted within the South East Genomic Medicine Service and based at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust.
The Generation Study is a landmark UK research study, led by Genomics England (GEL) exploring the clinical utility, benefits, challenges, and practicalities of offering whole genome sequencing to all newborns as a screening strategy for ~250 treatable genetic diseases, alongside the existing heel prick service, in order to accelerate diagnosis and access to treatments for rare genetic conditions. The Study will offer testing to 100,000 newborn babies at NHS recruiting Trusts across England.
This is a newly established role which will work with GEL and the clinical teams at the Evelina London to ensure babies and their families who receive a ‘suspected condition’ result from the research study have a smooth handover to the NHS for confirmatory testing and, if required, to the relevant care and support pathway, supporting rapid diagnosed and treatment with a direct impact on clinical outcomes.
We are seeking candidates with nursing, midwifery or genomic counselling backgrounds and the ideal candidate will have prior experience in genomics or maternity services as well as research.
Main duties of the job
Based at a regional level, the post holder will play a pivotal role in delivering the results pathway of the Generation Study for patients recruited in the South East. As the single point of contact for a ‘condition suspected’ result, they will work closely with Genomics England, recruiting Trusts in the South East and Evelina London as the main South East referral center, to support the smooth transition of the patient from the research study to NHS care, including liaison with the NHS newborn screening services in our region. Where required they will also support the specialist teams in providing support to parents through the return of results process.
The role will work closely with the South East GMS Generation Study team and the local research teams to support consistent approaches and care across the region, mapping and developing robust referral pathways, processes for monitoring activity, and capturing outcomes to inform the study and support high quality patient care.
Working for our organisation
This role is hosted within the South East Genomic Medicine Service (GMS), one of 7 regional services supporting the delivery of genomic medicine and research in their geographies, including the Generation Study. We work in partnership with our two regional Clinical Genetics Services, covering South London, Kent, Surrey and Sussex regions, to deliver standardised genomic testing pathways and the systematic embedding of genomic medicine in to routine care. We aim to reduce unwarranted variation and make demonstrable improvements to patient outcomes by ensuring their clinical care fully benefits from advances in genomics. We facilitate strong collaborations across disciplines and specialties, providing leadership to enable the multi-professional workforce to use genomics safely, effectively and efficiently. We are committed to appointing teams that represent the diversity across our region and ensuring that we have strong patient representation across all our programmes of work.
The role is based at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, working with clinical teams at our Evelina London hospital. Evelina London provides comprehensive health services for children, young people and women across London, South East England, and – for some rare conditions – the UK and the world. As the only NHS Trust in London with women’s and specialist children’s services on one site we have unique opportunities to provide high-quality, integrated care for mothers, babies and children.
