Job overview
This is a wonderful opportunity to lead a newly formed waste management team at Kings College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and to be part of a team with increased emphasis on Sustainability and Innovation. The role will also take a leading role in achieving targets as set out both internally and through outside agencies such as NHSE.
This role will also fulfil a recommendation to have a qualified Trust Waste Manager at all NHS Trusts. As such the post holder will be required to undertake the necessary training courses to achieve this aim. This should be completed within the first 6 months of being in post.
The post holder will report directly to the cross site Trust Recycling & Waste Resource Manager and have direct line management responsibility for the Assistant Waste Manager.
The role will also assist in identifying potential sustainable solutions in the waste industry to work towards the Trust achieving its sustainable goals over the coming years, as outlined in the Trust Green Plan.
Main duties of the job
Have responsibility in ensuring that all waste streams are correctly segregated, collected, stored and transported in a safe manner and in accordance with relevant guidance and legislation.
Have awareness of new innovations within the waste industry to introduce changes where possible. To include innovations that will assist the Trust in achieving its sustainability goals.
Staff line management.
Be an important first point of contact for colleagues from all disciplinaries, both clinical and non-clinical for queries/ issues around waste management.
Overall contract management of the on site dedicated waste contractors.

Education/ Qualifications
Essential criteria
Experience in the management of waste services.
Masters level qualification in estates or environmental (waste) related field or specialist post graduate qualification plus significant relevant post graduate experience in this area.
Desirable criteria
Evidence of continued learning including in sustainable waste management.
Knowledge and Experience
Essential criteria
In depth knowledge of a range of specialist technical areas such as general waste regulations, WEEE etc,
Experience in managing and negotiating external contracts,
Desirable criteria
Knowledge and understanding of the NHS and the challenges it faces.
Skills & Compentencies
Essential criteria
Able to communicate service related information to senior managers (both clinical and non-clinical), staff and external agencies.
Ability to manage initiatives within financial constraints and delivery to deadlines.
