About the Role
This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced and compassionate Medical Examiner Officer (MEO) to join the busy Medical Examiner Service at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust as the Lead Medical Examiner Officer. You will lead a small team of MEOs supporting the Trust’s Medical Examiners in scrutinising all deaths within the Trust’s acute hospitals and community deaths in Lambeth and Southwark. The service works collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders, including Coroners’ Offices, to support bereaved people through death registration and funeral arrangements.
You will be based primarily at the Medical Examiner Office at St Thomas’ Hospital, working alongside the Duty Medical Examiner, MEOs, and Bereavement Administrators. Occasional travel between sites and representation of the Trust Medical Examiner team at external training and networking events may be required.

The Lead Medical Examiner Officer will manage the Medical Examiner Officer Team, ensuring day-to-day service delivery meets agreed objectives, quality standards, and performance targets. You will assist Medical Examiners in scrutinising causes and circumstances of death and act as a key point of contact for relatives, healthcare professionals, Coroners, and registration services.
The role demands strong leadership, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work with sensitive information and complex clinical data within a multidisciplinary environment.
Experience
- Significant demonstrable experience as a Medical Examiner Officer at Band 6 level or higher.
- Experience working with people in sensitive and emotional situations.
- Experience delivering specialist training to frontline services.
- Experience managing meetings and implementing change and innovation.
- Previous line management experience.
- Experience requisitioning goods and services, managing stock, and non-pay budget expenditure.
- Desirable: Experience working in healthcare settings with multi-disciplinary teams across organisational boundaries.

- Knowledge of the Coroners & Justice Act 2009 and Notifications of Death Regulations 2019 relating to the Medical Examiner system.
- Full understanding of the Medical Examiner system operational remit within Bereavement Services or as a stand-alone office.
- Knowledge and experience of Datix/Radar and other clinical applications.
Qualifications
- Educated to degree level or equivalent advanced practical experience, including nursing and/or other clinical experience.
- Completed Royal College of Pathology Medical Examiner Officer training with evidence of ongoing continuing professional development (CPD).
