Guy’s and St Thomas’ is among the UK’s busiest and most successful NHS foundation trusts. St Thomas’ has one of the largest critical care units in the UK and one of the busiest emergency departments in London. It is also home to Evelina London Children’s Hospital. Evelina London cares for local children in Lambeth and Southwark and provides specialist services across south east England including cardiac, renal and critical care services. We lead a number of specialist service networks aiming to ensure children are treated locally where possible, but have access to specialist expertise when they need it. Our community services include health visiting, school nursing and support for families of children with long-term conditions. Our adult community services teams deliver care at the heart of the local communities we serve, working in partnership with GPs, local authorities and other healthcare and voluntary sector organisations. Working with our partners in Lambeth and Southwark, we are focusing on new ways of working to improve care for local patients. In February 2021 the Royal Brompton and Harefield joined Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, bringing together world-leading expertise in the care and research of heart and lung disease. Our merger provides a once in a generation opportunity to build a lasting, world-renowned heart and lung centre, providing the highest quality care for patients and conducting world-leading research. Job overview We are looking to appoint to one of the embedded senior HR positions within the Heart, Lung and Critical Care Clinical Group covering the Royal Brompton, Harefield and Guys & St Thomas’ sites. This clinical group aims to be one of the country’s leading academic clinical health systems for heart and lung medicine. Around 5000 staff on 4 hospital sites sit within this clinical group. Reporting to the Clinical Group Chief Executive, with a professional line into the Deputy Chief People Officer, you will have a specific portfolio of duties and responsibilities relevant to the Clinical Group, whilst also sharing overall responsibility for the delivery of the Trust’s short and long-term People strategy. Main duties of the job The Clinical Group (CG) People Director is a key member of the Clinical Group’s executive team accountable to and reporting to the CG Chief Executive and professionally accountable to the Trust’s Deputy Chief People Officer. The CG People Director is responsible for providing effective and specialist support and advice across all aspects of HR and OD within their Clinical Group and to operate as part of the wider Trust senior people leadership team to shape Trust wide strategy and policy. The post will also have direct accountability for the workforce transformation and innovation strategies and plans within their CG. The post is responsible for the strategic direction and performance of the embedded CG people function and will lead on developing and driving a high-performance, positive and inclusive culture within their clinical group. The postholder leads the embedded CG people team, working collaboratively with the People Operations and People Communities of Expertise teams in a matrix cross functional way to identify opportunities to improve the People service across the Trust in order to improve patient care. The CG People Director will lead the development of people solutions and capability required to deliver the CG’s strategic objectives and operational business plans. The CG People Director will seek out and use both internal and external workforce insights, intelligence and analytics, to identify people management requirements across the wider group. Person specification Skills/Knowledge/Ability Essential criteria Ability to positively influence people at all levels of the organisation, with a particular focus on the impact on patient experience, and care. Highly developed problem-solving, negotiation, interpersonal, administrative, budgetary, analytical, statistical, presentational, communication and leadership skills. Well-developed ability to: • Customise people strategies • Shape effective change management plans • Identify learning and development needs in a systematic way • Provide coaching and support on complex ER issues • Lead employee engagement initiatives • Use HR information systems to gather people data and insights Capable of inspiring people to think and act innovatively and to challenge established ways of doing things. Previous experience Essential criteria A proven track record of strategic and operational management at a senior level in a large complex organisation, including staff management, financial management and change management. Previous experience of workforce planning. Considerable experience of managing a team of staff, motivating and developing the team, including setting objectives, mentoring and coaching to meet appropriate deadlines and working in a rapidly changing and complex environment Experience of working in a change environment with multiple stakeholders and securing their engagement, resulting in a successful project Experience of influencing staff at all levels to ensure project objectives are owned by all members of the teams including users and stakeholders. Education/ Qualifications Essential criteria Master’s degree, and additional in-depth professional training and specialist knowledge, acquired through training and experience over an extended period Chartered Member of Chartered Institute of Personnel & Development / FCIPD or equivalent experience Evidence of continuing professional development in service improvement e.g. process mapping, demand and capacity analysis, role redesign.
