About the Role
Are you politically aware, highly organised and a skilled communicator who can help turn ideas into action? Do you want to work at the heart of local democracy, supporting elected representatives to champion residents, influence decision-makers and deliver meaningful change? This is a unique opportunity to work closely with Green Group councillors, helping them engage with local communities, develop campaigns and respond to the issues that matter most to people in Islington.
In this role, you will provide political, administrative and communications support to the Leader of the Opposition and the Green Group. You will support councillors in their duties as elected members, assisting with local communications, community engagement, policy development and the planning and delivery of local campaigns.
You will be at the heart of local politics, helping Green Group councillors turn ideas into action and deliver meaningful change for residents by working across communications, campaigns, policy and coordination.
Key responsibilities include:
- Providing political advice and support to the Leader of the Opposition and the Green Group of councillors as required
- Carrying out administrative duties to ensure efficient and timely support
- Coordinating responses to media enquiries and ensuring effective communications
- Managing internal Group communications and supporting long-term strategic communications and campaigns
- Creating and maintaining content for press releases, newsletters and social media channels
- Supporting public affairs activities including engagement with elected representatives, government bodies, stakeholders and community organisations
- Planning, organising and supporting Group meetings
- Researching policy issues and preparing briefings and background information for councillors
- Supporting councillors in their roles as local representatives, community champions and campaigners
- Maintaining an understanding of current affairs, particularly relating to local government and issues affecting residents
This post is politically restricted under local government legislation, meaning the successful candidate will be unable to hold certain political positions or undertake certain political activities while employed in this role. It offers a unique opportunity to support elected members and contribute to the democratic process from within local government.
You will join the Democratic Services team within Law and Governance, working closely with the Green Group of councillors and supporting their activities across the borough.
If you are politically aware, passionate about public service and ready to support elected members in making a real impact for residents, this role is for you.
Experience
Experience of working in a political environment, ideally supporting elected representatives. Experience in politics, local government, campaigning or public affairs is beneficial but not essential if you can demonstrate transferable skills, political awareness and a passion for public service.
About you
Politically aware, highly organised and motivated by making things happen. Comfortable managing projects, building relationships and navigating a fast-moving political environment. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with people from diverse backgrounds. Good judgement, discretion and understanding of confidentiality in a political environment. Ability to work under pressure, manage competing priorities and meet deadlines. Flexibility to undertake occasional evening and weekend work with appropriate notice.
Qualifications
No specific qualifications are stated as essential; however, strong written and verbal communication skills are required, including the ability to prepare clear briefings and communications for different audiences. A good understanding of local government and democratic decision-making is important.
