St Thomas’ has one of the largest critical care units in the UK and one of the busiest emergency departments in London. It is also home to Evelina London Children’s Hospital. Evelina London cares for local children in Lambeth and Southwark and provides specialist services across south east England including cardiac, renal and critical care services. We lead a number of specialist service networks aiming to ensure children are treated locally where possible, but have access to specialist expertise when they need it. Our community services include health visiting, school nursing and support for families of children with long-term conditions. Our adult community services teams deliver care at the heart of the local communities we serve, working in partnership with GPs, local authorities and other healthcare and voluntary sector organisations. Working with our partners in Lambeth and Southwark, we are focusing on new ways of working to improve care for local patients. In February 2021 the Royal Brompton and Harefield joined Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, bringing together world-leading expertise in the care and research of heart and lung disease. Our merger provides a once in a generation opportunity to build a lasting, world-renowned heart and lung centre, providing the highest quality care for patients and conducting world-leading research. In partnership with King’s College London we have dedicated clinical research facilities including an MHRA accredited Phase I clinical trials unit. Job overview We are seeking to appoint a Research Development Officer to the Research Office of the Heart, Lung and Critical Care (HLCC) Clinical Group of Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust. The Research Development Officer will play a key role in delivering the Trust’s service for research development, assisting, and facilitating HLCC Clinical Group researchers in their research endeavours, thereby supporting the Trust to develop and grow its research business. The post is hybrid, working 2 to 3 days per week on site and working across our four hospitals (Royal Brompton Hospital, Harefield Hospital, Guy’s Hospital, St. Thomas’ Hospital) as required. Part-time working will be considered for the right candidate. Shortlisted candidates will be notified the week commencing Monday 26th August with interviews expected to take place early in September. Main duties of the job The post holder will assist the Research Development Team by providing pre-award support on commercially funded research grants, providing administrative assistance, including costing and guidance in the development and submission of funding applications. They will also assist the Research Development Team in raising the profile of research internally and externally through various events and campaigns, highlighting the support of the Research Office to research staff and communicating research funding and training opportunities. Working for our organisation The R&D Department at Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospitals is part of the Guy’s & St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust (GSTFT). It supports the Heart Lung and Critical Care Clinical Group research and innovation activities. HLCC is one of 4 Clinical Groups at GSTFT. The role is based at Royal Brompton Hospital but travel to other sites will be a necessary part of the role. The team support a broad portfolio of research projects across the breadth of cardiac, respiratory and critical care medicine. Detailed job description and main responsibilities Assist researchers within HLCC in the preparation of commercially funded research grants. Facilitate post-award and project set-up processes, ensuring funding information is passed on to other members of the Research Office in a timely and efficient manner. Assist the Research Development Manager and Research Development Associate in organising and implementing research development initiatives in the Trust and promoting the Trust’s research activities to internal and external stakeholders. Contribute to the collection of data and preparation of reports including assessment of grant submissions, grant awards, research publication outputs and other assessments of research activity, outputs and impact. Promote the corporate image of the Trust and its research activity. Provide costs for research grants, liaising with Finance and other Trust departments as necessary. Act as Associate AcoRD (Attributing the costs of health and social care Research & Development) Specialist, maintaining a working knowledge of AcoRD and its application in the NHS. Source relevant funding opportunities for researchers in the Heart, Lung and Critical Care Clinical Group. Support the research development team with grant administration. Person specification Qualifications Essential criteria Degree qualification in a health or life science subject or equivalent experience within a related environment Desirable criteria A post-graduate qualification or specialist equivalent in a biomedical or clinical subject Experience Essential criteria Administrative experience in a large or complex organisation, for example with NHS R&D or HEI pre-award grant support. Experience of facilitating or coordinating research activities and events Experience of working with databases and reporting tools Desirable criteria Project Management experience Experience of research governance and approvals processes (including ethics, HRA and IRAS) Experience of minuting meetings, synthesising evidence, writing reports and other documentation for different audiences Knowledge Essential criteria Knowledge of AcoRD and SoECAT Knowledge of medical and scientific terminology Knowledge and understanding of major funding streams for health related research Excellent organisation and administration skills with the ability to deal with competing demands and high workloads Ability to assimilate complex and diverse information and then present the issues concisely and clearly to a variety of stakeholders with differing levels of clinical, scientific, or administrative expertise Numerate and able to handle complex financial costing and budgetary information Ability to negotiate effectively and broker solutions Able to manage multiple projects simultaneously and prioritise effectively to meet deadlines Guy’s and St Thomas’ celebrates, respects and values the diversity of its staff and patients.
