St Thomas’ has one of the largest critical care units in the UK and one of the busiest emergency departments in London. It is also home to Evelina London Children’s Hospital. Evelina London cares for local children in Lambeth and Southwark and provides specialist services across south east England including cardiac, renal and critical care services. We lead a number of specialist service networks aiming to ensure children are treated locally where possible, but have access to specialist expertise when they need it. Our community services include health visiting, school nursing and support for families of children with long-term conditions. Our adult community services teams deliver care at the heart of the local communities we serve, working in partnership with GPs, local authorities and other healthcare and voluntary sector organisations. Working with our partners in Lambeth and Southwark, we are focusing on new ways of working to improve care for local patients. In February 2021 the Royal Brompton and Harefield joined Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, bringing together world-leading expertise in the care and research of heart and lung disease. Job overview The Research Grant Support Officer will prepare cost estimates and complete the associated finance paperwork for research funding applications to NIHR funding streams, to relevant Research Councils and to Medical Research Charities, often working in collaboration with KCL. The Research Grant Support Officer will support the researcher through the external funding application process. Main duties of the job To liaise with researchers to prepare cost estimates and complete the finance due diligence paperwork for research funding applications in accordance with agreed timetables, funder policies and department procedures. To support the researcher through the external funding application process and to be the key Trust contact for any researcher applying for external funding. To review, interpret and retain up to date copies of Dept. of Health costing guidance, NIHR and other grant funder guidance and funding deadlines, explaining relevant regulations to the researcher. To resolve queries from research budget holders regarding financial management matters with minimal supervision. Working for our organisation The Finance Department is based in Great Dover Street, and the post holder will be expected to work across multiple sites and buildings, attending external meetings as required. The position will be Hybrid split 2 days in the office/3 days working from home. The R&D Finance team is part of the Financial Income and Planning team. The R&D Finance team provides financial support, both operational and strategic, to the Trust’s R&D Directorate and hosted research networks Detailed job description and main responsibilities Duties and Responsibilities a. To liaise with researchers to prepare cost estimates and complete the finance due diligence paperwork for research funding applications in accordance with agreed timetables, funder policies and department procedures. b. To support the researcher through the external funding application process and to be the key Trust contact for any researcher applying for external funding. c. To review, interpret and retain up to date copies of Dept. of Health costing guidance, NIHR and other grant funder guidance and funding deadlines, explaining relevant regulations to the researcher. d. To liaise with other teams within the Finance Department and other Hospital departments to identify NHS support and treatment costs related to research studies e. To work with finance staff at Kings College London, Kings College Hospital and at other collaborating research partner institutions in the preparation of joint research applications. f. To maintain an up-to-date and accurate database of research applications processed by Trust g. To work with the Trust R&D Contracts Manager in the preparation of DH and other contracts for R&D funding where an award is made. h. To work with finance and contracts staff at Kings College London, Kings College Hospital and at other collaborating research partner institutions in the preparation of contracts and sub-contracts for R&D funding. i. To facilitate the initiation of new research grants within the Finance department. j. To prepare costing spreadsheets for budget setting and for financial planning. k. To resolve queries from research budget holders regarding financial management matters with minimal supervision. l. To prepare financial returns in line with external bodies reporting requirements. Person specification Qualifications Essential criteria Relevant degree or professional qualification or equivalent experience Experience Essential criteria Relevant work experience in the field of finance, research or academic research Desirable criteria Experience of working in an accounting department Knowledge and experience of working with grant applications and research contracts Skills Essential criteria Ability to interpret complex guidance and written research documentation Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to explain to explain Finance concepts to non-finance staff Strong IT skills especially Microsoft Excel Rigorous attention to detail Desirable criteria Understanding of the concepts and methodologies used in the costing of services, including the preparation of salary estimates.
