About the Role

As a Senior Ecologist, you will join a team of over 50 ecologists with more than 30 years of experience in ecological surveys, assessments, and advice on soil, land use, hydrology, sustainable drainage, arboriculture, ecosystem services, natural capital assessment, biodiversity strategies, metrics, and cultural heritage.
You will work on diverse projects across the UK, Europe, and internationally, including Urban and Greenfield Residential Development, Highway and Rail Schemes, Power Stations, Electrical and Gas Infrastructure. Our clients include EDF Energy, National Grid, the Environment Agency, Transport for London, Highways England, Network Rail, the Canal and River Trust, and Housing Associations.
In this role, you will focus on Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG), leading and managing small to medium projects to meet time, budget, and Safety, Health, Environment and Quality (SHEQ) targets. Reporting to the Team Leader, you will coordinate and complete assigned tasks, manage ecological aspects of client relationships, provide technical advice, and lead by example. You will have opportunities for personal development and mentorship from industry-recognised Technical Leaders to support your career progression.
Your work may involve protected species, pollution, surface water and materials management, air quality, or noise, often in some of the world’s busiest and most beautiful locations. You will also contribute to international Environmental, Social and Health Impact Assessments and participate in our natural capital community of practice.
Experience
- Proven experience working within Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) projects
- Commercial and project management skills for small to medium projects
- Knowledge of ecological principles, relevant environmental and EcIA legislation, policy and guidance
- In-depth knowledge of particular plant or animal groups and appropriate field survey skills
- Experience in categorizing and assessing habitats from plant communities present
- Proven track record in writing Preliminary Ecological Appraisals (PEAs), Biodiversity Net Gain assessments, Ecological Impact Assessments (EcIAs), and Ecology Chapters for Environmental Statements
- Basic experience in writing or assisting with project and/or plan-level Habitats Regulations Assessments (HRA)
- Experience in bid production and client interaction
- Ability to lead surveys and manage small survey teams
