About the Role
The Long-Term High Security Estate (LTHSE) manages some of the most complex and high-risk prisoners in the Prison Service, including Category A and B men convicted of violent, sexual, and terrorism-related offences. Based at HMP Belmarsh, this role is primarily focused on the High Secure Unit where the Close Supervision Centre (CSC) is located, with potential duties across both the High Secure Unit and CSC.

The Senior Registered Forensic Psychologist will work with some of the most complex, high-risk, and behaviourally challenging individuals within the high-security prison estate. As part of a multidisciplinary team, you will be responsible for assessing, managing, and supporting prisoners who demonstrate violent or highly disruptive behaviour.

Key responsibilities include delivering comprehensive psychological risk assessments, developing detailed case formulations, and providing recommendations for prisoner selection, ongoing management, and progression within the CSC system. You will hold a specialist caseload, contribute to Care and Management Plans, deliver evidence-based interventions, and advise the Central Management Group (CMG) and CSC Management Committee (CSCMC).

The role also involves staff supervision, training, consultancy, research, and participation in security and risk-related processes such as Dynamic Risk Assessment Meetings, Category A reviews, and Parole Hearings. Expertise in personality disorder, mental health, complex risk assessment tools, and long-term therapeutic work is essential, alongside advanced skills in teamwork, consultation, training, and clinical leadership.

You will supervise and support Forensic Psychologists in Training, requiring strong knowledge of BPS and university qualification pathways, and will be responsible for line managing staff.

A key component of the role is promoting a joint operational-clinical delivery model through close collaboration with operational colleagues, senior managers, psychiatry and mental health services, and wider stakeholders to ensure consistent, evidence-based practice. This position offers varied specialist opportunities and requires high-level expertise and multidisciplinary working within a high-security context.

Requirements

Experience
Applicants must be Registered Practitioner Psychologists with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and eligible to use a protected title. A minimum of two years post-registration experience is required at the point of taking up the post.

About you
You will demonstrate strong expertise in personality disorder, mental health, complex risk assessment tools, and long-term therapeutic work. Excellent teamwork, consultation, training, and clinical leadership skills are essential. You will be able to supervise and support trainee forensic psychologists and manage staff effectively. The ability to work collaboratively with operational colleagues, senior managers, psychiatry, mental health services, and other stakeholders is crucial to promote a joint operational-clinical delivery model.

Qualifications
You must be a Registered Practitioner Psychologist with the HCPC and have completed the necessary university qualifications and BPS pathways relevant to forensic psychology practice.
