About the Role
The Senior Temporary Works Design Engineer will review temporary works design briefs and manage the allocation of work. You will undertake both repetitive and complex structural engineering and geotechnical calculations, verify and deliver temporary works designs to time and budget. You will provide expert technical support and contribute to methodology workshops, buildability sessions, and value engineering workshops to identify innovative, cost-effective strategies and solutions.
Key responsibilities include ensuring design risks are considered and Design Risk Assessments are prepared, following contractual design assurance processes, and assisting design assurance on projects through audits to identify best practice and areas for improvement. You will develop and maintain relationships with technical consultants and suppliers, managing their input in design, development, pricing, and delivery of technical solutions for site.
Additional duties involve attending and chairing meetings and interviews as necessary, advising on methodology costs, participating in design option reviews, and actively contributing to knowledge sharing and best practice across Balfour Beatty. You will support the company’s Group Safety by Design & Engineering forums, maintain personal expertise to keep Balfour Beatty at the forefront of industry capability, undertake internal project work to improve team effectiveness, coach and develop less experienced team members, and exercise designers’ obligations under the Construction Design & Management (CDM) Regulations 2015. You will also manage workload for CAD Engineers, Technicians, or Operators.
Experience
- Extensive experience with a thorough knowledge of engineering principles
- Skilled in Microsoft Office products (especially Excel) and analytical software such as Autodesk and Bentley
- Strong numerical capability with ability to assimilate data, review, and report
- Good report writing skills
- Current CSCS card

About You
- Degree in a relevant engineering discipline preferred
- Achievement of CEng MICE or similar equivalent is preferred
- Up to date CPD records
- Keeps abreast of the latest technical knowledge in the industry
- Pays attention to detail and sees tasks through to completion
- Excellent communication skills with all levels of personnel
- Team player with good interpersonal and influencing skills
- Innovative and continuously seeks to improve knowledge and services
Qualifications
- Degree in a relevant engineering discipline preferred
- Chartered Engineer status (CEng MICE) or equivalent preferred
