About the Role
The Software Asset Management (SAM) Analyst role is part of the Supplier Management team within the wider Business Transformation division, reporting to the SAM Manager. You will support the day-to-day operations of the SAM team and contribute to improving software asset management across the business. Your primary responsibility is to control software licenses, ensuring they are utilised and optimised according to agreed practices or binding contracts, maintaining legal compliance.
You will plan, lead, and coordinate your assigned software publishers while ensuring the team’s business-as-usual activities are covered. This role requires close partnership with Procurement, Software Deployment and Packaging, Engineering teams, and other departments across the business including Sainsbury’s Tech.
You will navigate the complexities of delivering at pace, build strong relationships internally, and uphold SAM principles. You will enable senior stakeholders to make data-driven decisions regarding software investments by providing credible SAM analyses.
Key responsibilities include responding to licensing queries, maintaining licence entitlement records, creating Effective License Positions (ELPs), investigating exceptions from SAM tools, supporting complex projects impacting software, and guiding junior team members. You will also contribute to strategic development plans, support SAM initiatives, and maintain a customer and retail-focused approach throughout decision making.
Experience
Ability to analyse large data sets and apply repeatable methods to prepare data for consumption. Experience in business and supplier partnership, stakeholder management, and cross-functional working. Familiarity with ITIL practices and proficiency with at least one License Management tool (e.g. USU Aspera, ServiceNow SAMPro, Flexera, Snow). Knowledge of common software publisher licensing frameworks such as Microsoft, IBM, Oracle, VMware.

Qualifications
Certified ITIL4 Foundation. Software Asset Management Fundamentals or equivalent certification is desirable. Commitment to ongoing personal and professional development. Demonstrated ability to support and coach junior colleagues.
