About the Role
As an Apprentice Podiatrist, you will attend University and clinical placements as set out in the degree programme, completing and passing academic modules and clinical placements to the required standard to progress through the programme. You will organise and manage a clinical caseload mapped against your evolving capability, gaining knowledge and experience in providing podiatry care for patients with a variety of conditions including diabetes, musculoskeletal, rheumatological, and vascular conditions. You will develop analytical and reasoning skills to assess, diagnose, and implement individualised treatment programmes for patients with both acute and long-term clinical needs, empowering patients and others to participate in self-care and enhancing person-centred care.

You will gain experience across a wide range of clinical areas such as diabetic outpatients, vascular, community outpatients, rheumatology, musculoskeletal, and domiciliary/home visits. Under supervision and within agreed competencies, you will provide care, carry out assessments and diagnoses in line with departmental protocols, and use clinical reasoning and evidence-based practice to formulate appropriate care plans. You will deliver treatments using equipment for which you have received adequate training, monitor and adapt care plans accordingly, and continually reassess patients to progress treatments effectively.

You will follow departmental and organisational policies and guidelines, exercising discretion to make justified diagnoses and decisions within professional guidelines. You will monitor patient needs and refer back to podiatrists when necessary. You will be actively involved in health education and management advice for patients, relatives, and carers, contributing to coordinated care plans within the clinical team. You will assist in joint visit sessions, understand the implications of medication and medical conditions on care planning, and promote the value of podiatry to patients, carers, and health professionals.

Additionally, you will carry out risk assessments including manual handling, ensuring safe interventions in compliance with health and safety regulations. You will maintain accurate records of patient consultations and clinical activity using the POMR system and contribute to trust information systems in a timely manner. You will participate in trust and service audits, service development activities, and contribute to departmental and trust policies as requested.

You will prioritise clinical and non-clinical activities to manage your caseload effectively, plan your workload including domiciliary visits, provide cover for team members as needed, and assist podiatrists in planning activities and programmes to ensure smooth organisation of patient group work.
