About the Role
As the face of Sainsbury’s at every doorstep, you will deliver groceries to customers in a thoughtful, friendly, and helpful manner, making them feel valued. You will drive a 3.5 tonne refrigerated van to deliver orders on time and in excellent condition. Your responsibilities include completing vehicle checks to ensure the van is roadworthy, clean, and organised, securing customers’ shopping before departure, and following planned routes while driving safely in various traffic, weather, and road conditions. You will move containers weighing up to 15kg and deliver shopping to a variety of properties, which may involve steps, lifts, or longer walks from the van. Excellent communication with customers is essential, including keeping them informed of any delays, handling queries, and managing order changes. When not making deliveries, you may assist across the store as needed. This role offers the opportunity to be part of a busy, fast-paced environment, especially during peak seasons, delivering exceptional customer service and supporting the wider store team.
Supporting you at work and beyond
Sainsbury’s offers a wide range of rewards and competitive benefits including: a discount card (10% off after 4 weeks, increasing to 15% on Fridays and Saturdays at Sainsbury’s), holiday entitlement based on hours worked, enhanced family leave options, pension and life cover with matched contributions, share schemes, retail savings on eating out and holidays, physical wellbeing schemes such as cycle to work and gym access, mental wellbeing support with 24/7 Employee Assistance Programme, and financial support including interest-free season ticket loans and pay advances.
Experience
Comfortable driving a larger vehicle safely in various locations including busy residential streets, city centres, and narrow country lanes. Experience working in a fast-paced, physical, and high-energy environment is beneficial.
About you
Friendly and welcoming with genuine enthusiasm for helping customers and pride in providing the best doorstep experience. Able to use initiative, solve problems, and make safe decisions while on the road. Enjoys working independently and as part of a wider team. Flexible and willing to work across the store and take on new challenges. Open to learning, developing, and using route and delivery technology confidently.
Qualifications
Must be over 18 years old and hold a full UK/EU driving licence for at least 12 months with no more than 6 points. Right to Work eligibility in the UK is required. You will complete an online driving risk assessment as part of the interview process and a driving assessment upon joining. Sainsbury’s uses in-cab AI cameras to monitor driver behaviour to ensure safety and compliance with road laws.
