About the Role
As a Data Engineer in the BDE team at ITV, you will play a key role in developing and maintaining the Synapse platform, ITV’s operational data engine. This ambitious transformation journey aims to modernize ITV’s data landscape to better collect and measure user behaviour, ensuring high-quality data powers core viewer experiences. Your role will be balanced across three main pillars: 50% feature building by creating new pipelines, data products, and real-time capabilities; 25% platform and service health including observability, cost management, decommissioning, and infrastructure-as-code; and 25% business-as-usual support to maintain platform stability and performance. You will work with streaming and batch pipelines using Dataflow and BigQuery, orchestrate with Python, and develop low-latency viewer-facing services in Go. You will deploy and manage infrastructure using Terraform, write comprehensive tests, set up monitoring and alerting, implement security controls through GCP IAM, and participate in the team’s support and on-call rota to ensure critical issues are addressed promptly. This role offers the opportunity to work in a collaborative, agile environment with a distributed team across the UK, Brazil, and Spain, contributing to ITV’s data-driven future.
Experience
- Hands-on experience with Google Cloud Platform (Pub/Sub, BigQuery, Dataflow, Composer/Airflow, Cloud Functions, GKE, Cloud Build) or equivalent cloud platforms with a willingness to deepen GCP expertise.
- Strong SQL skills and proficiency in at least one programming language: Python, Java, or Go, with openness to learning others.
- Experience with streaming data, SQL-based transformation tooling, and CI/CD pipelines.
- Good knowledge of Terraform and deploying containerised services.
- Ability to work within complex architectures involving event-driven streaming and multi-project environments.
About you
- Comfortable working in a mature Agile environment, participating in daily standups, sprint planning, and retrospectives.
- Collaborative mindset, able to work effectively in a matrix organisation and distributed teams, liaising with Product Managers and stakeholders across Personalisation, Marketing, Commercial, and Finance.
- Strong desire for continuous improvement, eager to enhance validation tools and contribute reusable components to the team’s toolkit.
- Curious about AI and keen to experiment with AI-assisted engineering tools such as Claude Code, Gemini ADK, and Vertex AI agents.
Qualifications
- No specific formal qualifications required, but relevant cloud and programming experience is essential.
- A proactive attitude and willingness to learn new technologies and methodologies are critical for success in this role.
